Women’s Basketball Stays Perfect In CCC With Win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team remained undefeated in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 58-51 win over the University of New England Thursday evening.
 
The first quarter of action saw neither team lead by more than four points. Roger Williams and the University of New England combined for two ties and six lead changes in the period. The Hawks would grab the final lead change of the quarter, with Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) sinking a jumper with 22 seconds left to put RWU up 14-12.
 
Jocelyn Chaput (Nashua, N.H.) knocked down a three-pointer a minute into the second quarter to put UNE back up 15-14. Yet Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) laid in a bucket two possessions later to regain the lead for RWU. She would later hit a jumper with 4:04 left to make a 27-19 advantage for Roger Williams, the team's largest to that point. The Hawks would ultimately going into halftime up 31-25.
 
The Nor'Easters rallied in the third quarter, chipping away at the deficit until they managed to tie the game at 35 apiece with 4:32 left. Despite holding the Hawks to only six points in the frame, UNE still was unable to gain the lead, as both teams entered the final quarter tied at 37 apiece.
 
Both teams traded baskets throughout most of the period, with Roger Williams never leading by more than four for a large portion of the quarter. Timely free throw shooting at the end of the period helped Roger Williams hold on to the lead, going 6-for-8 in the final three minutes of play to escape with the six-point win.
 
Walther led the Hawks with a career-high 20 points in the game. Quilty had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to go along with seven blocks. Rebecca Ritchie (Hanover, Mass.) added seven points and a career-best five steals.
 
Alicia Brown (Greenland, N.H.) led UNE with 21 points along with eight rebounds. Sadie Nelson (Windham, Maine) scored nine points, with Chaput adding six points and seven boards.
 
On Saturday, Roger Williams (7-4, 5-0 CCC) will head to Wentworth Institute of Technology, while UNE (6-5, 3-2 CCC) hosts Nichols.
