Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team bowed out of the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament
Saturday afternoon after a 1-0 loss to Western New England University in the CCC Quarterfinals.
The Hawks, who were 9-6-4 overall and 5-2-1 in conference play, were ranked sixth in the conference standings entering postseason play. The three-seed Western New England University Golden Bears had 11-6-1 overall record and a 5-2-1 CCC record before Saturday's playoff game.
The Golden Bears took the first shot of the game in the seventh minute. The attempt by Nick Liccardi went wide. Liccardi took another wide shot in 22
nd minute.
The Hawks first shot came in the 25
th minute.
Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) tried to give the visiting team a lead but his shot was blocked.
Kabine Conde (Philadelphia, Pa.) tried to do the same thing for his team in the 34
th minute but WNE's goalie, Sam Brewer, was there for the save.
With less than 10 minutes left in the first half, Liccardi received a yellow card.
Both RWU and WNE got off shots before the half ended but neither changed the score of the game.
The second half opened up with two shots by the Golden Bears within the first five minutes. The first by Logan Pingree was high and the second by Liccardi was saved by Hawks goalie,
Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.).
In the 52
nd minute,
Tyler Kuchenbecker (Wellesley, Mass.) tried to push a header in for the lead but it went just high.
Three shots came from WNE in middle minutes of the half. Two were saved by Geschickter and one went wide.
Conde's second shot of the day was saved by Brewer in the 67
th minute. Brewer grabbed another save on a Janson shot a minute later.
As the clock ticked down, both teams were trying to build some momentum. Shots by both teams in the final minutes were just missing.
The Golden Bears finally broke it open in the 89
th minute on a penalty kick goal by Troy Remillard. This was his 22
nd goal of the season.
The Hawks would be unable to answer in the last few seconds.
Geschickter had four saves on the day. The one-goal loss moved his goalie record to 7-5-2.
A tough loss for the Hawks ends their 2017 season.
