Women’s Basketball Beats MIT In Tufts Invite

Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball bounced back Saturday afternoon with a 70-65 over MIT in the second day of the Tufts University Tournament.

MIT took the early lead on a basket by Kara Holinski. The Engineers would then extend the lead to six with an 8-2 run to begin the contest. Roger Williams cut it to one on a pair of Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) free throws, but back-to-back baskets by MIT brought the lead back up to five with 2:24 left in the opening quarter.

The Hawks would answer with back-to-back-to-back three pointers on their next three possessions to grab the lead, with Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) closing out the quarter with a jumper to put RWU on top 18-12 after the first.

In the second quarter, the Engineers quickly cut the deficit to two in the first two minutes of the game (18-20). However the Hawks answered with a 7-0 run capped off by a Stephanie Bramante (Stoneham, Mass.) layup to give RWU a 27-18 lead, their largest of the game to that point.

RWU maintained its lead through throughout the rest of the quarter but the Engineers chipped away at it towards the end of the period. A layup by Dolly Yuan pulled MIT within two (32-34) with 2:20 to play. However, both offenses stalled over the remainder of the quarter, as RWU entered halftime with the two-point lead.

The Hawks opened the third on a 5-2 run, with their lead hovering between three and five for most of the period. With RWU leading 45-42 with 3:21 left in the quarter, the Hawks used a 9-2 run to end the period to take a ten-point lead going into the fourth.

MIT managed to pull back within the game towards the end of fourth, closing an 11-point deficit to two (61-63) with just under two minutes left. However a turnover and a missed three on two of their final three possessions helped RWU hold on for the win.

Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) finished with 21 points and four rebounds, while Walther scored 20 with three boards and three assists. Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) added seven points and 12 rebounds.

Taylor V'Dovec had 23 points for the Engineers, with Holinski scoring 16 and Yuan finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Roger Williams (2-1) hosts UMass-Dartmouth on Tuesday.
