Women’s Basketball Claims Win Over Rhode Island College

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team defeated the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen 54-42 Sunday afternoon in Bristol, R.I.

The Hawks entered their first game after the short Thanksgiving break with a 3-1 record and the Anchormen had won all four of their matchups.

The home team found their way on the board first with a jumper by Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) and then added two more on a Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) fast break layup, which was assisted by Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.).

The Hawks defense stayed tough in the first few minutes, preventing the Anchormen from finding the bottom of the net and going on an 8-0 scoring run of their own.

Jordyn Gauvin hit a jumper with just under five minutes left in the first quarter to put the visiting team on the board. The Anchormen pulled within four with a minute and a half left in the quarter on a three by Jessa Rubera and then within two on a steal and breakaway layup by Ornela Livramento. The Hawks carried a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.

Walther drowned her first three of the game a minute into the second quarter. A three by Gauvin cut the Hawk's lead down to nine.

With three minutes left in the half, the Anchormen put on a full court press in attempt to grab a quick steal, but the Hawks easily broke the press and finished the play with a layup by Sam Mancinelli. The score at the half was 37-25 with the Hawks holding the lead.

Gauvin led the Anchormen at the half with 13 points and Livramento pulled down four rebounds. Nicholas had racked up 10 points in the first half, and Walther and Jerahian both had seven. Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) led the Hawks with four assists. The Hawks shot over 60% from the field.

The Hawks forced a shot clock violation in the Anchormen's first offensive possession of the half. Jerahian's layup in the second minute of the half was the first score for either team in the third quarter. The Hawks pulled out to a 15-point lead after Walther hit her second three of the game.

The third half ended on a half court buzzer-beater by Rebecca Ritchie (Hanover, Mass.). The Hawks held on to a 47-32 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. The Anchormen tried to work their way back into the game in the second half of the fourth quarter, but the Hawks still held a significant lead. The Hawks handed the Anchormen their first loss of the season and picked up their fourth win.

Gauvin led all scorers with 20 points and Nicholas led RWU's scorers with 14. Livramento pulled down nine rebounds. Both Nicholas and Dunn had seven rebounds for the Hawks. Dunn also finished with six assists. There were 14 blocks in the game, seven by each team.

The Hawks finished with a 45.3% field goal percentage, opposite RIC's 30.4%. The Hawks only missed three three-pointers out of seven attempts.

The Hawks will play in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup Wednesday against Western New England University in Springfield, Mass.
