Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team closed out the regular season with a 74-37 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon.
The win for the Hawks officially secures the #2 seed for the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, beginning next Tuesday.
Prior to the game, the two seniors on the Roger Williams Women's Basketball team,
Emma Klis (East Northport, N.Y.) and
Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) were recognized for their contributions to the program over the past four years.
The early part of the first quarter saw a back and forth game between Wentworth and Roger Williams. After
Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) stole a pass and went the other way for the first bucket of the game, Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) drained a three for the Leopards to put them on top.
Tere would be four more lead changes over the next five minutes before
Gabby Jerahian broke a 10-all tie with a free throw at the 3:11 mark. The Hawks would use that basket to close the quarter out on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter with a 19-10 lead.
The Hawks would break the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Leopards 24-8 in the period. The turning point for Roger Williams was a two-minute in the middle of the quarter where a 10-0 Hawk run extended their lead from seven to 17. Roger Williams would eventually enter halftime with a 43-18 lead.
The final two quarters saw Wentworth continue to struggle offensively, as the team shot only 26.3 percent from the field (5-for-19). The Hawks took its largest lead of the game with just over three minutes left in the game, going up by 41 en route to the 37-point win.
Walther finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Same Leone added 13 points. Jerahian score 13 while
Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) had seven points and ten boards.
McGibbon and Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) each finished with six points and a steal. . Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) added five points, with Kellie Messier going for four points and four boards.
Roger Williams (18-7, 15-3 CCC) will host Salve Regina Tuesday in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals. Wentworth ends the year with a 1-17 mark in the CCC and an overall record of 3-22.
