Women’s Basketball Hands Loss To Gordon

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team got back on track Wednesday evening, following up their first conference loss of the season with a 58-51 win over Gordon College.

It was a low-scoring affair early on, with both teams combining for only eight points over the first three-plus minutes of play. The 4-4 tie would last for over two minutes until Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) laid in a bucket with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. She would later convert a three-point play for a five-point Hawk lead.

Gordon managed to knot the game at nine with a trey by Megan Foley (Malden, Mass.) and a pair of free throws from Brooke Dyson (Houston, Texas). However, Anna Walther sank a jumper at the buzzer for an 11-9 first quarter RWU lead.

Roger Williams maintained its lead for the first half of the second quarter. However, Foley gave Gordon its first lead of the game at the 5:43 mark with a steal and a bucket to make it 16-15 in favor of the Scots. Yet that would be their last basket of the period, as the Hawks ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 24-16 halftime lead.

Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) gave Roger Williams its first double-digit lead with a pair of free throws with 6:50 left for a 29-18 advantage, as the Scots failed to score in the first three minutes. Gordon managed to pull within six but the Hawks eventually grabbed a 42-34 edge entering the fourth.

The Hawks never surrendered the lead in the final period of play. The Fighting Scots again pulled to within six multiple times in the quarter but never came closer.

Quilty finished with a double-double for Roger Williams, going for 17 points and ten rebounds with three blocks. Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) had 12 points, six rebounds, and a career-high six steals, while Nicholas added 13 points off the bench.

Foley led Gordon with a game-high 23 points along with five boards and three steals. Dyson added eight points and a pair of steals.

Both teams will be on the road on Saturday, with Roger Williams (17-5, 14-1 CCC) heading to Endicott and Gordon facing (7-15, 5-10 CCC) Wentworth.
