Johnson & Wales Earns Win Over Baseball

Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University pitcher Brandon Budlong only surrendered three runs on three hits to propel the JWU baseball team to victory over Rodger Williams on Friday. His teammates helped him by banging out 14 hits in the 7-3 win over the Hawks

For most of the game, the Hawks could not figure out Budlong (Cranston, RI). He struck out a career-high nine batters and issued five walks to improve to 3-2. It's the second complete game of his career, but the first in a nine-inning game.

Eli Cammer scored on a grounder to give the Hawks a quick 1-0 in the top of the first. Smart base running by Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI) tied the game in the JWU half of the first, then freshman Joe Maracic (Syosset, NY) drove in Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.).

Ivan Reyes (Cranston, RI) doubled home Edison Mercado (Providence, RI) in the third then scored on the first of Lou Umberto's (Cranston, RI) game-high three hits. Umberto brought home Vin Amalfitano (Massapequa, NY) on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Bryan Terzian, who picked up one of the Hawks three hits, singled in the fourth then came around to score on a JWU fielding error. Roger Williams made it interesting the ninth when Terzian scored again and the Hawks had the tying run on deck, but Budlong induced a fly out to end the game.

Johnson & Wales gets back into conference action on Saturday when it travels to Lasell for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
