Baseball Grabs One In DH With Gordon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon and Roger Williams both kept their Commonwealth Coast Conference playoff aspirations alive on Friday afternoon as the two squads shared a doubleheader. Roger Williams outslugged Gordon 9-3 in the first game before senior starter Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.) delivered a gem on Senior Day for a 3-1 win in the finale.

The Fighting Scots improve to 9-20 on the season and 4-10 in the CCC. The Hawks stay a game ahead of Gordon in the standings at 5-9 and 12-25 overall. Gordon finishes out its conference slate tomorrow at Eastern Nazarene, while Roger Williams will host Endicott beginning at 11 a.m.

Game One

Gordon got on the board first with an RBI single by Travis Benoit (Worcester, Mass.) in the second, but the Hawks were able to counter in the top of the third. Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) homered for the second time this season to tie the game before sophomore Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) hit in the go-ahead run with a single in the same frame.

The Fighting Scots scrapped back in the second half of the third as Chris Leavitt (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) ushered Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) home on a single in front of the center fielder.

Roger Williams exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth to break the game open in a big way. After Dominguez knocked in his second run of the game to give the visitors a 3-2 lead, Gordon was almost able to get out of the inning when an error in the outfield led directly to two runs. From there, another run scored on walk before the red-hot Chris Bosco (N. Andover, Mass.) singled in two more to put the home side in a big hole. Five of the six runs scored in the inning were unearned.

The teams traded a pair of meaningless runs in the sixth and seventh to end at a 9-3 final. Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) shook off a tough start and earned his second win of the season in over five innings of work with six strikeouts.

Derek Hudson (Hudson, N.H.) fell to 2-2 on the season despite only allow three earned runs out of the seven that crossed the plate during his four-plus innings of work. Hudson K'd five Hawks.

Michael Farrell (Bellingham, Mass.) picked up the save after coming into the game with the bases loaded in the sixth before closing Gordon out in the seventh.

Bosco went 4-for-5 at the dish for the Hawks with three RBI.

Game Two

Trading places from the opener, it was Roger Williams who put the first run on the board in the nightcap. The Hawks scored their only run of the game when Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) put pressure on the Gordon defense with a pair of steals before advancing home on a throw-out attempt at third.

Gordon was unfazed by the early deficit and found some timely hitting down the stretch. Christian Hodge (Waltham, Mass.) evened the game with a two-out single to score Morgan Hyde (Thomson, Ga.), whom had doubled in the previous at bat.

Hodge delivered again with a perfectly executed bunt between the pitcher and first baseman, bringing Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) home for the 2-1 lead.

Gordon added more cushion to the narrow lead with a blasted double off the bat of Leavitt in the sixth, plating Tarr after a missed cutoff.

Amore turned in his best performance of his senior season by going a complete game without allowing an earned run to score. He punched out three Hawks and had only two hits against him in the big moment.

Sam Bennett (Andover, Mass.) suffered the loss despite striking out five batters and walking only one.

Demers, Hyde and Leavitt combined for seven of Gordon's nine hits.
