Salem State Pushes Past Baseball

Box Score SALEM, Mass. – Salem State used a six-run sixth inning to help secure an 8-4 victory over Roger Williams on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Vikings snap a three-game losing streak to even their record at 9-9 on the season. The Hawks slip to 6-14.

Salem State scored first as two walks and an error in the fourth led to a two-out, run scoring single by Joe White (Bellingham, Mass.). Vikings' starter Jose Martinez (Lawrence, Mass.) shut down Roger Williams until the top of the fifth. Back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt set up Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) with an RBI single. An error by the pitcher plated another run before Ryan McDermott (Wrentham, Mass.) added an RBI single off reliever Richie Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) for a 3-1 Hawks' lead.   Martinez lasted 4.1 innings and allowed four hits, three runs (two earned) with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Vikings got one back in the bottom of the inning as Alex Toomey (Beverly, Mass.) knocked in Tyler Galimi (Northbridge, Mass.). Salem State regained the lead in the sixth with six runs, taking advantage of an error that helped produce an RBI by Nick Day (Lynn, Mass.), who was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Colton Fontaine (Newburyport, Mass.) followed with a two-run single before a Galimi RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Madoc Fisher (Wayne, N.J.) made the score 7-3. Toomey's second hit lifted the score to 8-3 as Roger Williams' starter Michael Farrell (Bellingham, Mass.) was finally relieved in the inning by Jimmy Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.). Farrell, who allowed five hits in the inning, finished the day allowing eight runs (seven earned), three walks and four strikeouts in the loss.

Sharp pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for Salem State, giving up four hits with a strikeout to improve to 3-0 on the season. Tim Woods (Wilmington, Mass.) entered in the eighth for Salem State and was met by an Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) double. Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-4. Woods closed out the game for Salem State, going two innings and allowing a run on four hits with two strikeouts. Reid Bryant (Andover, Mass.) retired the side in order in the eighth for the Hawks.

Toomey, White, and Galimi all finished 2-for-4 for Salem State while Toomey and Fontaine added two RBI's.  McDermott, Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) and Terzian all had a pair of hits for Roger Williams.
