Baseball Puts Up 10 In Win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. –The Roger Williams University Baseball team rolled off its third consecutive win Sunday afternoon with a 10-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in a non-conference tilt.

Both teams' starters allowed the first batter on in the first inning, but managed to get out of trouble with a double-play to end the potential rally.

Eastern Connecticut State struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of a misplayed ball with one out. D.J. Scavone (Auburn, Mass.) brought in Pat Sirois (Cromwell, Conn.) with two outs with a ground-rule double down the right field line, putting ECSU on top 1-0. Roger Williams was able to get runners at first and third with two outs in their half of the frame, but Warrior starter Brian Hnatuk (Trumbull, Conn.) was able to induce a fly-out to center to end the threat.

The Hawks bounced back in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Tyler Rondeau (Bourne, Mass.) beat out a potential 5-4-3 double play to allow Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) to score and tie the game at one apiece. Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) stepped up next and plunked an RBI double down the right side to bring in Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) and put RWU up 2-1.

ECSU threatened in the top of the fifth, getting the bases loaded with only one out. Hawk hurler Sam Bennett (Andover, Mass.) buckled down and struck out Alex Zachary, then got Alex Parkos (Meriden, Conn.) to fly out to center to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, RWU notched three consecutive singles to begin the inning. Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) notched the third hit to score Ryan McDermott (Wrentham, Mass.). After 5-4-3 double play, Dominguez punched a hit just over second base to score Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.), putting RWU up by three.

Roger Williams tacked on one run in the bottom of the seventh, when Terzian sailed 2-1 pitch over the opposite field fence for a solo home run. RWU would then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth, plating five runners over the course of the inning. The key hit was a two-RBI triple by Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.), bringing home Nowak and Sean Gaffney (Simsbury, Conn.).

Bennett picked up the win, giving up one unearned run in five innings of work with six strikeouts. Jimmy Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) tossed four scoreless innings for the save. McDermott was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Terzian and Nowak each had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored.

Hnatuck allowed two runs in 3.2 innings in the loss. Cory Baldwin (Cromwell, Conn.) was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4. Sirois went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Roger Williams (9-15) heads to Tufts on Tuesday, while ECSU (10-7) hosts Suffolk on Wednesday.
