Box Score Men's Soccer Draws Against MIT
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A late goal helped the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team force overtime against MIT, ultimately leading to a 1-1 tie.
After the MIT men's soccer team led the game 1-0 for 86 minutes, Roger Williams senior
Sean Janson netted the equalizer with 1:40 to play in regulation to send the non-conference contest into overtime. Neither team could find the back of the net in extra time as both teams left Cambridge today with a 1-1 draw.
Two minutes into the game, MIT freshman Loukas Carayannopolous (Westfield, N.J.) gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead as he gathered the ball from classmate Carlos Hernandez (Weston, Fla.) on a short pass at the top of the box. Carayannopolus buried the attempt into the bottom right corner of the net for his second goal of the season. For Hernandez, his assist marked his first collegiate helper and point.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Engineers until there was 1:40 left on the clock. Janson lined up for a free kick on the right side of the field approximately 30 yards from the net and drilled his second goal of the season into the upper corner of the goal to knot the game at 1-1.
Roger Williams took one shot in the first overtime session – a header by senior
John McCarthy, but MIT keeper Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, Mass.) stopped his attempt. At the end of the first overtime period there was a 30 minute lightning delay before the game resumed.
MIT outshot Roger Williams 3-2 in the second overtime session as junior Wesley Woo (Palo Alto, Calif.), classmate Joshua Wilson (West Chester, Pa.) and Hernandez all got off attempts but couldn't score. With under two minutes to play the Hawks had their best chance to post the golden goal. At 108:51 freshman
Jordan Lach's breakaway attempt hit the left post and 20 seconds later,
Colby Decker sent a shot over the crossbar, but that is where the game would finish as it ended in a 1-1 draw.
Roger Williams held a slim 19-17 margin in shots and a 7-2 differential in corner kicks.
Cowham (1-1-2) made six saves on seven shots faced in between the pipes for the Engineers, while
Nick Nelson (0-0-1) stopped the ball four times in his season debut.
Tonight marked the first tie between the two programs in the all-time series which dates back to 2011. In that time both teams are 3-3-1 against each other.
MIT opens New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a home match against Wheaton College slated for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, while Roger Williams hosts Gordon College the same day at 3:00 p.m. for its first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match of 2017.
