Volleyball Shuts Out UNE In CCC Opener

Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine  - The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team trailed for the majority of the initial set, but rallied to take the first frame and start towards a 3-0 result (28-26, 25-14, 25-13) against the University of New England in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball opener Tuesday evening (Sep. 19) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Hawks (7-4, 1-0 CCC) were led by Lara Loiacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) with 12 kills and five block-assists. Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) contributed 10 winners to go with five blocks (2 solo), and Maddie Neuberger (Remsenburg, N.Y.) had eight kills as well as four block-assists. Guiding the attack was Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Emiley Melillo (Kenmore, Wash.), with 18 and 16 assists, respectively. Katie Nugent (Lynnfield, Mass.) tossed in four service aces. Meghan Chartier (West Point, N.Y.) totaled 10 defensive digs.

For the Nor'easters (2-9, 0-1 CCC), Rene Roggenbuck (Goffstown, N.H.) and Molly Camelo (Melrose, Mass.) shared the team-high of six kills. Sydney Christiansen (Palatine, Ill.) put up nine assists, and her 11 digs were matched by Katie Marsh (Melbourne, Australia), who recorded three aces.

UNE had the edge at the start, taking a cushion as large as 15-9. RWU began to chip away at the deficit, and the visiting squad eventually registered three straight points to lock things up at 23-all. The Nor'easters had three set points erased by the Hawks, as kills were traded between Camelo and Nugent, Roggenbuck and Quilty, Kacie Flahive (Windham, N.H.) and Quilty again, and then Quilty sent in another to nudge Roger Williams in front for the first time (27-26). Grace Kenningham (Houston, Texas) followed with the deciding kill that wrapped up the 1st stanza.

The Hawks raced out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back in the 2nd. RWU took control at 3-2 in the 3rd, and soon utilized a 16-5 run to extend the gap into double digits.

UNE is back on its home court Saturday (1 p.m.) to face Nichols College.
