Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team powered its way to a 6-0 victory over Newbury College Saturday afternoon in the second game of the 2017 RWU Opening Weekend Tournament.
The Hawks will face Keene State College Sunday in the Championship Game. Keene State tied 3-3 against Clark and won 4-3 in the shootout to advance to the championship.
The Hawks put the pressure on Newbury early on, putting up eight shots in the first ten minutes of play, four of which were on goal. Their persistence would pay off in the opening minutes of the period.
Jordan Lach (Norton, Mass.) put back a deflected save off of a
Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) shot in the 15
th minute, putting the Hawks up 1-0. A minute later,
Tyler Kuchenbecker (Wellesley, Mass.) buried a shot in the right corner for a quick 2-0 Hawk advantage.
In the 21
st minute, Newbury misplayed a clear attempt on the ball, bouncing the ball backwards for an own goal and a 3-0 RWU lead. Roger Williams would round out the scoring the first half scoring in the 36
th minute, with
John McCarthy (Torrington, Conn.) booting in a shot off of a
Colby Decker (Colchester, Conn.) free kick.
RWU added two more goals in the second half, with Lach returning the favor to Janson for his first goal of the year in the 60
th minute.
Connor Edwards (Deerfield, Mass.) scored the final tally of the game in the 79
th minute, taking advantage of a loose ball in the box.
Hawk keeper
Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) stopped four shots on the day. Newbury's Chris Tran (Nantucket, Mass.) had ten saves in the game while Jarrod Smith (Watertown, N.Y.) made four stops.
