Men’s Soccer Downed By Late Goal

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team suffered its second loss in as many days as Johnson & Wales University defeated the Hawks 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales pulled away with a goal in the final minute of the game to earn the victory.

Both teams were a bit overzealous in their attempts to score early on, as evidenced by the three offsides in the first six minutes of play.

In the 11th minute, RWU's Andrew Vecere (Wayne, N.J.) sent a free kick into the box that bounced towards Jehon Balidemaj (Bronx, N.Y.). He would get a head on the ball but pushed it just a bit too high over the goal.

Roger Williams missed out on a couple of opportunities to tack the first goal on the board. In the 18th minute, Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) hooked his shot just a bit wide left of the goal, while Kabine Conde (Philadelphia, Pa.) was turned away by JWU keeper Nicholas Mancini (Toms River, N.J.) in the 38th minute.

JWU came close to scoring in the 53rd minute. Erick Goncalves (Clifton Park, N.Y.) put up a shot that sailed high and just bounced off the crossbar. Riley Spotton (Maywood, N.J.) tried to head in the loose ball but sent his shot wide left.

Garrett Bolton (Candia, N.H.) almost scored in the 81st minute, when he bounced a header towards the left post of the goal. However there was a JWU defender perfectly positioned between himself and the goal.

The turning point came in the final minute of the game, when the Hawks committed a foul in the box with 41.8 seconds left to play, leading to a Wildcat penalty kick. Jozef Jennings (Barrington, R.I.) stepped up and put a shot into the left side of the net, scoring the game winner.

Mancini collected three saves for JWU in the shutout win, while Nick Nelson (Madison, Conn.) had one stop in the loss.

Roger Williams (5-3-2) faces another in-state rival Wednesday afternoon as the Hawks take on Rhode Island College. Johnson & Wales (7-1-0) will be at Emmanuel, also on Wednesday.
