Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer could not get back on the winning side of the ledger as in-state rival Rhode Island College picked up a 3-2 non-conference victory over the Hawks Wednesday afternoon.
Rhode Island College took advantage of a Roger Williams error to score the first goal early in the game. In the fourth minute, Michael Faria (West Warwick, R.I.) served up a corner kick to the short side of the goal. A Roger Williams defender attempted to kick the ball out of the air and clear the shot, but caught a bad bounce off the ball as it rolled into the net for an own goal.
The Hawks made up for the miscue in the 15
th minute.
Colby Decker (Colchester, Conn.) found
Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) on the left side. Janson kept bringing the ball down towards the goal and eventually just tucked in a shot into the left corner to tie the game at one apiece.
The Anchormen would regain the lead in the 25
th minute. Preston Kar (Monrovia, Liberia) served up a corner kick from the right to the short side of the goal. Elimane Seye (Providence, R.I.) was able to leap over the RWU defense and head a shot into the right corner, giving RIC a 2-1 lead that the team would hold going into halftime.
The Ancormen would add to the lead in the 59
th minute. A Hawk foul led to a free kick in the middle of the field from about 25 yards out. Kevin Tay Munoz (Providence, R.I.) stepped up and bent the shot off the free kick around the defense and just inside the left corner for his first goal of the year.
RIC's two-goal lead would hold up until the 73
rd minute when the Hawks picked up another goal to cut into the deficit.
Jack Bicknell (North Yarmouth, Maine) put up a free kick from the right side to a jumping
Nicholas Sanchez (Southbury, Conn.). Sanchez got a head on the ball and buried it into the right corner to pull RWU within one.
Janson almost tied the game with just under two minutes remaining.
Michael Oliveira (Waterville, Maine) set him up with a long pass down the right side, then Janson made his way around a RIC defender with some fancy footwork. However his shot would be directly at RIC keeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, R.I.), denying the comeback.
Tashjian had five saves for Rhode Island College in the win, while
Nick Nelson (Madison, Conn.) finished with three saves.
Roger Williams (5-4-2) will step back into Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday at the University of New England. Rhode Island College (4-3-1) will host Little East foe UMass-Boston on Saturday as well.
