Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT opened the first day of the MIT Invitational by sweeping the Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team, 25-21, 25-18, 25-16, on Friday.
In a back-and-forth opening set, MIT pulled away for a 25-21 win. The tight play continued into the second stanza as the score was knotted at 11. A kill by sophomore Shea Landeene (Phoenix, Ariz.) followed by back-to-back aces from freshman Andie Maloney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) gave the Engineers some breathing room.
Roger Williams remained within striking distance, using a block by
Lara LoIacono and
Grace Kenningham to close the gap to 21-18. MIT responded with four straight points as junior Abby Bertics (La Jolla, Calif.) accounted for the last two, courtesy of a block and a kill. The hosts gradually established a 21-10 advantage in the final frame en route to a 25-16 victory.
Bertics led all players with 10 kills while hitting .409 as senior Lisette Tellez (Miami, Fla.) posted seven kills and three aces. Landeene also registered seven kills while Maloney tallied 21 assists, eight digs, three aces, and three blocks. Senior Clare Farley (La Jolla, Calif.) collected a match-high 10 digs to go along with three aces as sophomore Madison Lee (Hillsborough, Calif.) bolstered the defense with nine digs. Junior Christina Liao (Warren, N.J.) rounded out the squad with 10 assists, all coming in the third set.
LoIacono generated five blocks and four kills as Kenningham posted four kills and two aces for the Hawks.
Molly Quilty and
Jill McManaman both chipped in four kills while
Meghan Chartier totaled nine digs.
Nicki Fallisi notched six digs and two aces as
Maddie Neuberger produced four blocks.
Julia Fields dished out 11 assists, followed by seven from
Victoria Caruso.
