Women’s Basketball Takes Game Over Gordon

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team rolled to a 59-30 win over Gordon College Tuesday evening as the Hawks logged another Commonwealth Coast Conference victory.
 
RWU jumped out to to a quick start, getting on the board with a couple of shots at the free throw line by Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.). It was a slow start for Gordon, with the first two points on the board scored by Jenna Olson (Rutland, Vt.) at 6:27. 
 
RWU stayed aggressive throughout the first quarter with Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) making her way to the free-throw line for two at 3:20. A spectacular pass from Nicholas led to Rebecca Ritchie (Hanover, Mass.) knocking down a three pointer to put the Hawks up 13-6. The Hawks would remain on top with a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
Both RWU and Gordon showed their defensive effort early in the second quarter with neither team scoring for the first three minutes of the game. Nicholas put Roger Williams on top 20-8 with a jumper at 6:26, followed by a layup by Brooke Dyson (Houston, Texas) to give Gordon its first points of the quarter. Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) scored the final three points for Gordon in the quarter. Roger Williams end the first half on top 33-11.
 
Nicholas started the second half with a basket to put the Hawks up 35-11 at 7:28 followed by a basket by Gordon's Sarah Gibbs (Elizabethtown, Pa.). A three pointer by Jess Wall (Freeport, Maine.) helped the Fighting Scots go on a run, including by lay-up by Meghan Foley (Malden, Mass.). Coming out of a time out, Smith knocked down two to keep Gordon alive, making the score 35-22. However, back-to-back steals and layups for the Hawks by Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) to go back up by 17. The Hawks would end the quarter up 41-24.
 
A deep three by Sam Mancinelli at 6:44 put the Hawks on top 48-26. A layup by Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) at 5:07 helped make the score 50-28. Nicholas would later show her strength in the paint by getting an and-one to put the Hawks on top 53-38. A steal and layup by Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) at 3:48 coming out of Gordon's timeout put RWU up by 27. Roger Williams would eventually take the game 59-30.
 
Nicholas led Roger Williams with 17 points to keep the Hawks winning streak going, along with a Herculean effort from Walther with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Smith was the high scorer for Gordon dropping 7 points. Dyson had four points and five rebounds.
 
The Hawks will be home Thursday at 5:30pm against Wentworth Institute of Technology. Gordon next game will be also be at Western New England on Thursday.
