Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team picked up a 75-48 win over Wentworth Institute Technology Thursday evening.
The Hawks got off to a fast start, with
Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) making the first basket. Wentworth followed up with an Erin Morton (Norway, Maine) three-pointer. Tegan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) later worked in the post putting two straight baskets on the board. RWU would eventually go up 17-9 to start the quarter. Later, the Hawks showed great ball movement to find Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) open for a three-pointer to put the Hawks up 22-11. Wentworth ended the first quarter with a jumper by Michelle McCloskey (Madison, Conn.) to bring them within nine.
In the second, Dunn grabbed an offensive rebound to put herself at the free-throw line at 9:45 and made both free-throws. RWU showed up on both sides with a great defensive effort ending with a great dish from Nicholas to Dunn to put the Hawks up 31-13 with 7:39 left in the first half. Stephanie Mini (Topsfield, Mass.) made a basket at 6:40, with Tan'eja Drayton (Roxbury, Mass.) following later with a strong drive to send herself to the free-throw line to knock down both shots. Roger Williams would still be in front at the first half with a score of 45-24.
RWU started the second half with an offensive rebound by Nicholas, followed up by a
Rebecca Ritchie (Hanover, Mass.) three-pointer. On the other end, Nicholas showed effort grabbing a defensive rebound and running the floor. She took a pass from Walther to make a three-point play, making the score 51-24. Morton drove hard to the basket to get herself a three point play at 7:07. Wentworth would then make back-to-back baskets, forcing RWU into a timeout. Wentworth scored nine straight points and pulled to 14 but the Hawks closed out the third quarter with a free throw by Ritchie to put the Hawks up 58-43. In the fourth, Wentworth came closer than 14 as RWU picked up the win.
Nicholas led Roger Williams with 25 points and 8 rebounds, along with Dunn adding 10 points and 11 rebounds. Morton finished as the high scorer for Wentworth with 21 points and 7 rebounds.
The Hawks will be at Nichols College Saturday at 5:30pm. Wentworth's next game will be Saturday at Salve Regina.
