Women’s Basketball Folds Nichols

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College women's basketball team suffered a 62-43 setback to Roger Williams University on Saturday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action in Dudley, Mass.
 
The Bison drop to 3-13 overall and 1-8 in the CCC and return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Endicott College for a 5:30 p.m. game. Roger Williams improves to 14-3 and 8-2 in league games with the win.
 
Freshman Isabella Nerney reached double-figures in scoring for the second-straight game as she knocked down four three-pointers en route to a game-high 15 points and two steals. Junior Mekaela Fithian-Giantonio added six points, while sophomore Jessica Larsh, senior Allison Cerrato, and freshmen Shannon St. Lawrence and Beth Laing netted five points apiece. Larsh added five assists and a pair of steals, while Cerrato led the team with nine rebounds.
 
Roger Williams was paced by 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal from senior Mariah Nicholas. Senior Anna Walther added 13 points and five rebounds, while classmate Teagan Dunn grabbed 10 rebounds to go with six points and four blocks. Senior Rebecca Ritchie and freshman Sam Mancinelli added seven points apiece, with sophomore Gabby Jerahian adding nine points of her own.
 
Nichols shot 23.1% (12-of-52) from the field, while connecting on 34.8% (8-of-23) of its three-pointers and 78.6% (11-of-16) of its free throws in the game. Roger Williams countered by shooting 47.2% (25-of-53) from the floor, and 54.5% (6-of-11) from both beyond the arc and at the free throw line in the win. The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 46-27, but committed 16 turnovers to just 11 for the Bison.
 
The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle as there were five lead changes and three ties in the opening 10 minutes of action. A layup inside from Cerrato tied the game at 11-11 with 2:09 to play, but the Hawks scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 15-11 lead after one period.
 
In the second quarter, Roger Williams built a 24-16 lead following a three from Rebecca Ritchie, and the Bison answered with five-straight points on a layup from junior Amy Assad and a triple from Larsh to trim the deficit to 24-21 with 5:20 remaining. A three from Nerney nearly three minutes later kept it a 30-26 game, but the Hawks ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 38-26 advantage into the break.
 
The Bison answered with a 7-0 run to open the third quarter as another three from Nerney made it a 38-33 game and forced a Roger Williams timeout with 6:40 remaining. The two teams traded scores the rest of the period, but the Hawks took a 46-38 lead into the final period.
 
A layup inside from Shannon St. Lawrence pulled the Bison back to 48-42 with 8:58 to play in the fourth, but the Hawks ended the game on a 14-1 run to pull away for the 62-43 victory.
 
All-Time Series
Saturday marked the 47th meeting between the two programs, and Roger Williams leads the all-time series 30-17.
