BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball Team was downed 3-1 by Coast Guard Academy in a close non-conference match this past Saturday.
In the first set, the Bears were only in the lead once at 4-2. The Hawks then went on a five-point run to put themselves in the lead at 7-4. RWU would keep the lead the rest of the set to shut down the Bears with a victory of 25-19.
The teams exchanged the lead four times in the second set with Coast Guard taking the lead at 10-12. The set remained close with a tie at 14-14, being the seventh tie in the set thus far.
The Bears had a four-point run forcing the Hawks to go into a timeout at 14-17. The set tied again at 18-18 with Coast Guard taking the lead and going on a 7-1 run to win the set 25-19.
The third set started close with neither team getting a lead of more than two points until the Bears went on a five-point run to take a 12-8 lead. Coast Guard had a seven-point lead at 17-10, which would be the biggest lead of the game. The Hawks made a comeback with a run of 7-2 but could not manage to take the lead. Coast Guard won the third set 25-22.
RWU took a 13-6 lead in the fourth set, after going on a 9-2 run. The Bears managed to cut the deficit to three at 14-17, with the remaining of the set staying close. Coast Guard took the lead at 21-20, which would be their first lead of the set. The teams went back and forth until Angelou Dunton (Seattle, Wash.) got a kill taking an assist from Makenna Martin (Granbury, Texas) to win the game 25-23.
Nicki Fallisi (Salem, N.H.) had a double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs.
Katherine Pickard (St. Petersburg, Fla.) had 12 kills and three digs.
Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had 31 assists, 11 digs, and one ace.
Dunton had a double-double with 14 kills, 19 digs and two aces. Amanda Dake (Victor, N.Y.) had a double-double with 15 kills, 17 digs, and one ace. Martin had 44 assists, nine digs and two aces.
Roger Williams (11-11) will travel to Curry College this Wednesday. Coast Guard (15-8) heads to Smith College on Tuesday.
