Women’s Soccer Set Back By Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. Hosting Roger Williams University today in a rematch of the 2017 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title game at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex, the Fighting Scots booked a pivotal 3-2 Senior Day win over the Hawks to improve to 3-2 in league play (8-6 overall).

Devin Lacroix, Lexi Potter, and Emily Rodriguez led the way for the Scots with a goal apiece, while Jill Kefalas, Asha Steele, and Lacroix added assists and keeper Giselle Maso recorded two saves.

The Scots got their offensive gears turning early to put the Hawks on the their heels when Kefalas crossed from the right side to a waiting Lacroix, who one-timed a ball to the far post past a diving Morgan Strassburg (Fr./Longmeadow, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead just three and a half minutes into the first. RWU's Morgan Snow (Jr./Rowley, Mass.) got her first of the day at 19:03 after outpacing the Scots' back line for a near post finish, but Potter gave the Scots the edge once again off a Steele helper in the 33rd to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Despite several other quality opportunities including two headers just off frame from corners, Gordon could not find the back of the net again in the half and carried the narrow one-goal lead into the break.

With more favorable weather conditions in the second half, both teams possessed more cleanly and traded chances until Snow scored a nearly identical goal to her first at the 68:17 mark to bring the game back to a stalemate. Though the Hawks held a 4-1 shot advantage over the next 10 minutes, it was the Scots who capitalized in the 80th minute when Rodriguez floated a tough angle shot from the left side over top of Strassburg to lift Gordon to the eventual 3-2 victory.

"They are a good team, well coached and we were knocked back by the early goal we gave up," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "But we didn't panic and played really well going forward and created enough quality chances to be ahead at halftime. We had several players play extremely well and show why they deserved to start this game today.

"We are starting to find ourselves and we look like we have a style and a way to play the game that is efficient, effective and productive. If we can add tough and resilient to the list we will be there at the end of the season with the other teams that have earned a playoff spot.

"We are making forward progress but going behind makes the opportunity of winning games that much harder playing catch up. We got back into the game twice thanks to individual goals by Morgan Snow. However, we worked hard all over the pitch to make that happen.

"We are a very good team when we have the ball but only better than average out of possession. If we can communicate better on the pitch and work better together to defend as a unit more consistently we will be of a championship caliber program once again.

"We have players playing in new positions and they are learning to adapt to their new roles for the team. Everyone has improved collectively over these past few months and we are more balanced with more options than when the season began in August.

"On our day we can compete with any team and it seems in our conference this year more than ever, more teams have the opportunity to win the championship. It is most definitely not a one horse race, which is a good thing.

"We believe we can challenge, compete and perhaps with a little bit of luck the result could have been 3-2 in our favor, however we are still in the running and with three games to go we will have a big say on how the regular season unfolds.

"Bring on Curry, our next CCC opponent...we're ready!"

The Scots return to CCC action as they host Nichols College on Wednesday, October 17 for a 3 p.m. kickoff. The Hawks, now 6-8 overall (3-2 CCC), face Lasell on Monday, October 15 for a non-conference tilt at 3 p.m.
