BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team lost in a tight game against Western New England University this Wednesday, losing in 2-1 in a shootout after double overtime.
Less than three minutes into the game, Haley Daigneault (Longmeadow, Mass.) shot in the middle of the arc off a loose ball to score the first goal for the Golden Bears. Despite six shots at goal, the Hawks could not reach the back of the net.
In the 21
st minute, Lana Felice (Pawling, N.Y.) appeared to score a goal for WNE, but it was disallowed because of a foul. Seven minutes later, Halle Harvey (Millers Falls, Mass.) tapped a shot that rolled into the goal to put the Golden Bears in the lead 2-0.
Attempting to cut the deficit for the Hawks,
Brooklyn Cenatiempo (Trumbull, Conn.) had a close shot in the 33
rd minute that just missed wide. The first half ended with WNE in the lead at 2-0.
Ten minutes into the second half, Cenatiempo took another shot on goal, taking an assist from
Alex Coppinger (Guilderland, N.Y.) to put the Hawks on the board, 1-2. Dana Dufour (Gloucester, Mass.) for the Golden Bears stayed busy in goal saving three shots from RWU.
To tie the game in the 51
st minute,
Sydney McCarthy (Little Falls, N.Y.) took an assist up the middle from Coppinger to put the score at 2-2. Then in the 62
nd minute, WNE took a timeout and came back with two shots on goal with saves from
Callie Flanagan (Wenham, Mass.)
With the score at 2-2 at the end of the second half, the game went into overtime. Over the 10-minute period, RWU got the only shot on goal from Coppinger, which was saved by Dufour.
The game went into double overtime to try to break the tie. Neither team could reach the back of the goal despite four shots from the Hawks and two shots from the Golden Bears. The teams then went into a shootout.
During the shootout, RWU's only successful shot was from Coppinger. Jacqueline Clark (Auburn, Mass.) and Maggie Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) both scored for UNE to help them get the win.
Flanagan had nine saves for RWU. Dufour had 11 saves for WNE.
Roger Williams University (6-9, 3-6 CCC) will travel to Nichols College this Friday. Western New England University (4-11, 4-6 CCC) will host Gordon College this Friday.
