MILTON, Mass. – Roger Williams University women's soccer came through with two second half scores to lift them past Curry College, 3-1, on Wednesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Walter M. Katz Field.
With the win the Hawks improved to 7-9-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCC, while the loss dropped the Colonels to 8-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play.
Curry got on the board just 4:07 into the contest as the Colonels were awarded a free kick after a foul and Isabella Shields (Lakeville, Mass.) buried the shot and put it past Roger Williams' netminder
Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) to give the home squad the early 1-0 advantage.
The Hawks netted the equalizer in the 11th minute as
Sarina Olson (Bristol, R.I.) scored her second goal of the season, burying a shot off an assist by
Gabbi Rozumek (Woodstock, Vt.).
Roger Williams went up 2-1 in the 46th minute when
Morgan Snow (Rowley, Mass.) recorded her fifth goal of the season, firing a shot from 20 yards out and past Maggie Chamberlain (Taunton, Mass.). The Hawks tacked on an additional score in the 76th minute as
Maggie Hickey drilled a shot past the Curry goalie for her third tally of the season.
The teams were even in shots (8-8) while Roger Williams held a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Picking up the win in net for the Hawks was Strassburg, who finished with four saves. Chamberlain stopped three shots in the loss.
"We gave up an early goal but looked in total command and no doubt were the better team for most of the game," said Head Coach
Tim Moody. "We didn't change too much even when we gave up the goal on the free kick. We continued to press and play our style of soccer and got the goal we needed fairly quickly to tie it up.
"We got the go-ahead goal by doing exactly what we practice and it was a reward we deserved. We were pretty solid at the back and in midfield and really stopped any dangerous situations occurring and it was just a matter of time until we secured the game with the third goal.
"It was always going to be a challenging game because of the conditions but we adapted very well. It didn't distract us from our main objective. We are very much a team and it isn't just one player you have to thank every time we win a game of soccer.
"We have had many good performances this season, with many different players stepping up and being the game winner. Either from goals, tackles, headers or saves, it all counts and it all matters."
The Colonels will hit the field again on Saturday, October 20 when they travel to Endicott. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. Roger Williams returns home to face Wentworth on Saturday at noon.
