BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball Team won against Western New England University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match this Saturday, 3-1.
Prior to the match, Roger Williams' three seniors
Jill McManaman (Bellerose Village, N.Y.),
Nicki Fallisi (Salem, N.H.), and
Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.), were honored their contributions to the RWU Volleyball program.
In the first set, Quilty got a block assist at 3-1 to break the school record for total blocks, beating the old record of 399 set by Rebekah Dion '11. The Hawks went on an 8-2 run early on forcing the Golden Bears to call a timeout with the score at 6-13. RWU kept a lead of three or more until Cassandra Holmes (Ellington, Conn.) for WNE had a kill to put the score at 15-17. The match remained close until the Hawks took the win, 25-18.
The Golden Bears came into the second set strong, not letting the Hawks obtain the lead once. They stunned RWU with a 7-0 run to take a 12-4 lead. WNE kept a lead of six or more the remainder of the game with a final score of 25-13.
The third match was tight with the Hawks taking the biggest lead of the match at five points with a score of 12-7. The Golden Bears then took the lead with a 5-0 run at 15-14. The set was tied three more times until RWU took the 25-21win with an assist from
Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) on a kill by Quilty.
The Hawks kept the lead the entire fourth set with small runs throughout. They took their biggest lead at 19-11 until WNE fought back to cut the deficit to 17-20, which was the closest the game had been since the score was 6-9. The last few points came down to service and attack errors, with RWU taking the win 25-21 on a Western New England service error.
Mcmanaman had nine kills, two aces, and two digs, while Fallisi (Salem, N.H.) finished with 12 digs, seven kills and one ace for RWU. Quilty added seven kills, four blocks and four digs and Fields went for 34 assists, nine digs and one ace.
Toni Fiore (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led WNE with 10 kills and two digs. Holmes had nine kills and five digs, while Jenna McCormack (Nashua, N.H.) had 33 assists, seven digs and three aces.
Roger Williams (15-12, 6-2 CCC) and Western New England (9-19, 3-5 CCC) will both begin the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament on Tuesday.
