HARTFORD, Conn. — The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team earned third place at the Trinity College Tournament with an 84-72 win over Mitchell College Saturday afternoon in the consolation game.
 
The Hawks essentially put the game away in the first quarter. RWU staked themselves to a 14-0 lead, holding Mitchell scoreless over the first six minutes of the game. RWU's defense forced three turnovers while forcing the team to shoot 0-for-9 from the field. Though Mitchell managed to score 12 points in the final four minutes of the quarter, RWU still held a 26-12 lead going into the second.
 
In the second quarter, Mitchell made a strong run to get back in the game. Trailing by as many as 17, the Mariners managed to pull within four with just over two minutes left to halftime. Yet RWU brought the lead back up to ten entering the break, going up 42-32.
 
In the third quarter, Mitchell used a 7-0 run in the final 2:40 to pull within two going into the fourth (51-53). They would tie things up at 53 on their first possession of the final period, but RWU responded with an 11-0 run for a sizable cushion. The Mariners later brought it within four, but RWU managed to hold on for the win.
 
Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) was selected to the all-tournament team. She and Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) both finished the game with 23 points and five rebounds. Sam Leone (Ashland, Masa.) added 12 points, three rebounds, and four assists, while Karli Opalka (Southbury, Conn.) went for 11 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
 
Roger Williams (2-1) heads to UMass-Dartmouth on Tuesday.
