BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team held off a late run from the University of New England as the Hawks won 90-80 on Saturday.
The Nor'easters strike first with a three-pointer by Drew Patino (Lunenburg, Mass.). A layup from
Ian Carmichael (Atkinson, N.H.) and a three from
Rich Pugliese (Middlebury, Conn.) shifted the momentum to the Hawks as they led 9-6. Those baskets were part of a 7-0 run to make the score 13-6 until a Ray Evans (Troy, N.Y.) three ended the run. Roger Williams went on another run, outscoring the Nor'easters 12-2 to take a 14-point lead with 12:58 left in the half. RWU would continue to stretch the lead, going up 54-30 with 2:36 remaining in the half. The first half ended 58-36 to the Hawks.
The Nor'easters started the half with a layup from Avery DeBrito (New Bedford, Mass.). Roger Williams led by at least 15 for most of the second half but UNE tried to make a late run towards the end of the game.
A layup and three-point shot from DeBrito cut the lead to 88-77 with under a minute left. Alex Kravchuk (Mansfield, Conn.) followed with a three to make it an eight-point game with 33 seconds left. However two free throws from
Eli Harris (Falmouth, Mass.) stretched the lead back to 10, and the game ended 90-80 with a victory for the Hawks.
Leading the Hawks was
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) with 34 points and 14 rebounds. Pugliese contributed with 16 points and nine rebounds.
JJ Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) had 11 points and three rebounds.
For the Nor'easters, DeBrito finished with 17 points and four rebounds. Kravchuk contributed with 10 points and two rebounds. Both Andrew Marcelino (Methuen, Mass.) and Ryan Beatty (Rochester, Mass.) added with eight points and four rebounds each.
Roger Williams (4-4, 2-0 CCC) will travel to Salve Regina this Tuesday. University of New England (1-6, 0-1 CCC) host Wentworth this Tuesday.
