WORCESTER, Mass.—The Roger Williams Women's Basketball team was defeated by Scranton University who is currently ranked #6 in the nation on a Sunday night during the WPI Holiday Tournament.
In the first quarter, Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y.) from Scranton posted up
Karli Opalka (Southbury, Conn.) in the paint who drop stepped and laid it in for two with 7:25 left in regulation.
With 6:00 to go, RWU's Opalka came back to hit a shot in the paint assisted by
Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) from the top of the arch.
Next time down the court,
Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) drove into the paint for a layup in which she made it and got the foul. After she hit her free throw, she cut the lead down to 10 with 51 seconds left in the first.
Going into the second quarter, Huskies Danielle McCurdy (Philadelphia, Pa) turned the ball over from a three second violation. However, teammate Bridget Mann (Canadensis, Pa) helped make up for it by scoring her 18
th point of the half.
Leone came back firing up a three with 50 seconds left and the score at half was 39-17.
To open up the second half for the Hawks,
Alyssa Grant (Berlin, Conn.) hit a shot beyond the arc to achieve a score of 41-20.
Opalka chipped in four more points for the Hawks and Margarita Delparto (Canton, Mass.) scored her first three of the game with 1:50 left in the quarter.
The fourth quarter ended 72-35 but not before
Liz Wexler (Winsted, Conn.) recorded a three from downtown.
The Hawks face Wentworth at 5:30 p.m. on January 3
rd for a conference matchup.
