NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team collected its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory of the season with a 56-50 win over Salve Regina University Tuesday evening.
Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) and
Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) each had five rebounds and two steals for the Hawks, while Leone scoring 13 and Mancinelli going for 12 points.
Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) and
Alyssa Grant both added nine points apiece for RWU.
Mancinelli scored first in the game before the Seahawks tied things up. The game was back and forth early on before the Hawks were able to take a six-point lead with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. RWU would ultimately hold a slim 13-11 lead after the first period. In the second, Salve cut the deficit to only one early on, but a 10-0 run over a six-minute stretch allowed the Hawks to go up by 11. Roger Williams would eventually go into halftime with a 29-20 lead.
The ten-point cushion helped the Hawks hold on to the edge throughout the third quarter. Salve Regina was not able to come closer than seven in the period as RWU held a 39-30 going into the fourth. The final period saw Salve Regina pull within three early on in the quarter and trail 50-53 in the final minute. However the Hawks forced two turnovers in the final 58 seconds of the game while Salve Regina missed both of their field goal attempts over the stretch to help push RWU to victory.
Roger Williams (3-5, 1-2 CCC) will head to Connecticut College on Thursday.
