Baseball Gets First Win Of The Year In Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team split a pair of games down in South Carolina Tuesday, winning the opener 8-6 over Rochester before falling 1-8 to Case Western Reserve University.

In the top of the first, Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn.) knocked a one-out single, then came home on an RBI triple from Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.). Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.)  followed with an RBI groundout to score Bosco and give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead.

Rochester got one of those runs back in the second on an RBI single from Steve Pickering but RWU came right back with two more in the third. The Hawks took advantage of two Yellow Jacket errors in the inning when Stone singled up the middle to score DePreta and Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.). Roger Williams added one more in the fourth on an RBI single by Bryan Goodwin and another in the seventh when Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) scored on a throwing error from the pitcher.

Rochester used an RBI ground-rule double and a sacrifice fly to pull within three. Stone kept his hot bat going in the top of the eight, soaring a two-run homer to left to make it an 8-3 game. Rochester made a late rally, scoring in the eight and adding two more in the bottom of the ninth. The Yellow Jackets had runners at first and second with the winning run at the plate with two outs. Yet Matt Vernacatola (Berlin, Conn.) got Grant Kilmer to foul out to first two give RWU the win.

Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.) picked up the win for RWU, going seven innings and allowing three runs with seven strikeouts. Stone was 3-for-5 with a run and a career-high five RBI. Goodwin and Eddy Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) each finished 2-for-5 at the dish.

Against Case Western Reserve, the Hawks fell behind early and could not quite come back. Two Hawk errors in the top of the first led to a pair of unearned runs for Case Western Reserve on a sac fly and a fielding error.

The Spartans added one in the fourth on an RBI single from Ryan and then two more in the fifth on a two-run homer by Rocco Maue.

Roger Williams got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning, with Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) putting an RBI single in left to score Dominguez. However that would be the only run in the game for the Hawks, as Case added three more in the eighth, punctuated by a two-run homer by Tyler Wypiszenski.

Sam Bennett (Andover, Mass.) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in seven innings with five strikeouts. Bosco went 3-for-5 at the plate while Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) was 2-for-4.

Roger Williams (1-6) will face Case Western Reserve again tomorrow at 2pm.
