Box Score LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team suffered a 12-1 setback to Case Western Reserve University Wednesday afternoon.
Hawk starter Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.) and Spartan starter Matt Levine were locked in over the first four innings of play. Brett limited the Spartan offense to only two hits and two walks over the first four frames while Levine allowed two hits, one walk, and one hit batsmen over the same stretch.
Case Western Reserve managed to get on the board first in the top of the fifth. After a leadoff walk, Rocco Maue knocked a home run to left to put the Spartans on top 2-0. They would add four more in the sixth inning when Maue sent another shot over the left field fence for a grand slam.
After a scoreless seventh, the Spartans batted around in the eight and posted another four spot in the frame for a 10-0 lead. The Hawks got one run on the board in the bottom of the inning with Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) coming home on an error in the infield. However, Maue's third home run of the game in the ninth helped Case Western Reserve get the win.
Brett suffered the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) in six innings with five strikeouts. Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn.) was 2-for-3 at the plate while Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) went 2-for-4.
Roger Williams (1-7) will play Rochester on Thursday.
