Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team posted an 11-4 win over Rochester before falling 2-3 to Trinity College Thursday afternoon.
Rochester struck in the top of the first, getting three runs on an error and a two-RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Roger Williams managed to cut into the deficit in the fourth, with Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) drawing a bases-loaded walk. Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) followed with a two-RBI single, scoring Tyler Rondeau (Bourne, Mass.) and Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) to tie the game at three.
In the fifth, Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) came home on a wild pitch to give the Hawks the lead. Then a Rondeau RBI single brought home Eddy Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) for a 5-3 RWU advantage.
RWU broke the game open in the sixth with six runs in the frame. Roth and Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn.) scored on a misplay at short followed by RBI hits from Rondeau and Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.). Rochester scored one run in the eight but the seven run Hawk lead was too much to overcome,
Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) picked up the win, going eight innings and giving up four runs (three earned) with six strikeouts. Roth was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored with Rondeau going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Against Trinity, Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) used a bunt single to bring home Gulino in the top of the second. Mack Lauder got the run back for the Bantams in the bottom of the inning, hitting an RBI double to tie the game at one.
After three scoreless innings, Dominguez regained the lead for the Hawks, scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth. The Hawks looked poised for the win, but Cooper Mooney tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single and then scored the go-ahead run off of an attempted double steal. The Hawks would go down 1-2-3 in the ninth as Trinity grabbed the win.
Matt Vernacatola (Berlin, Conn.) gave up two runs in six innings with five strikeouts in the loss. Dominguez was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) went 2-for-4.
Roger Williams (2-8) will face Trinity again Saturday in their last game of Spring Break.
