Baseball Wins First Home Game Of 2018

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University played its first game after two weeks off due to weather and playing conditions. The Hawks came away with a 7-5 win over Keene State College in the team's first home game of the season.

In the first inning, Hawk starter Sam Bennett (Andover, Mass.) allowed a one-out walk to Nate Rossi (Hampstead, N.H.) but was able to get out of the inning with a 4-3 double play. In RWU's at-bat, Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) and Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn.) kicked off the inning with back-to-back walks. Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) moved them up a base with a groundout to second and Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) brought in Roth with the same putout.

The following inning saw Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) reach on a walk and a single. Roth later hit a grounder to short, but a poorly thrown ball to first allowed Jenkins to score from second, putting RWU up 2-0. Bosco added to the lead with a two-RBI single to right that just dropped in front of the right fielder, allowing Cedeno and Roth to score and give RWU a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Rossi led off by reaching second after a misplayed fly ball in right field. After a groundout to first moved him over, he scored on a wild pitch to the backstop, putting the first run on the board for Keene State.

The Hawks grabbed that run back in the bottom of the fifth. Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) led off the inning with a single to left. Jenkins stepped up next and launched an RBI double to the gap in left center, bringing home Dominguez. Then with the infield in, Bryan Goodwin (Belmont, Mass.) pushed a single down the right field line past the first baseman to score Jenkins.

Keene State made a run in the top of the sixth. After Tom Merucci (Windsor, Conn.) and John Tarascio (Wethersfield, Conn.) got on to begin the inning, Devin Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) and Connor Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) brought them in with one-out singles. Connor Longley (Foxboro, Mass.) blooped a two-out single to left to score Springfield and pull the Owls within two. Keene State added one more run before the end of the inning when Walsh came in on dropped ball in the outfield, making it a 5-6 deficit.

Roger Williams helped get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) punched a deep fly ball to left center for an RBI double.

In the eighth inning, Keene State's Abe Grainger (Bedford, Mass.) put a scare into the Hawks in his at-bat. With two outs, he sent a deep shot to left field. Yet fortunately for the Hawks, Eddy Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.), who just entered that inning as a defensive substitute, tracked it down and made a great jumping catch to end the inning.

Ryan Havunen (Lincoln, R.I.) came on in the ninth for the Hawks. He allowed a leadoff single but induced a 5-4-3 double play and a strikeout to get the save.

Bennett went 5.2 innings, giving up five runs (one earned) in the win while striking out six. Bosco was 3-for-5 with two RBI in the game while Jenkins was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI.

Shawn O'Donnell took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) in 1.2 innings. Tarascio was 2-for-5 for the Owls.

Roger Williams (3-8) will take on UMass-Boston tomorrow. Keene State (8-5) faces Western Conn. St. on Saturday.
