Baseball Takes Down #4/5 UMass-Boston

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team earned its second win in as many days, defeating the #4/5 ranked University of Massachusetts Boston 5-1 Friday afternoon at Monan Park.

After scoring their only run in the bottom of the first inning, the Beacons failed to drive in another run, despite having at-least one player reach base in every inning.  In two separate innings, the Beacons left the bases loaded, while the Hawks used a grand slam by Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.J.) in the fourth inning to get all the run support they needed to earn the upset win.

With the four-run cushion, Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.) and Chris Flynn (Nagatuck, Conn.) would continue to shut down the Beacons over the final five innings.  Garcia collected the win, after striking out six, while only allowing the one-run, which was unearned, on seven hits.  Flynn registered his first save of 2018 after pitching four scoreless innings.  The right allowed just three hits and struck out four in the best showing of the young player's career.

Despite the grand slam, the Beacons pitching staff did everything they could to limit the Hawks.  Tyler Arruda was handed his first loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits.  From there the bullpen continued to shut down the Hawks bats with Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.), Anthony Pescara (Hinsdale, Ill.), and Chris Munro (Marshfield, Mass.) allowing just two hits over the final four innings respectively.

Ryan McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.) had the Beacons lone RBI in the loss, while Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) recorded the team's only extra base hit, a double in the fifth inning.

With the win the Hawks ended a three-game skid to the Beacons and won their second of three meetings in Monan Park.

The Beacons entered the contest ranked 4th on the D3Baseball.com National Poll and 5th on the ABCA National Poll.

The Beacons are now 4-2 in Monan Park in 2018.
