Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team posted a 3-2 victory over Tufts University Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
Hawks pitcher Michael Farrell (Bellingham, Mass.) had a one-two-three inning to start the game off. Jamie Weiss (Manhasset, N.Y.) got through the bottom of the first after retiring the first two batters. Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) drew a walk while Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) knocked an infield single to put runners at first and second. However, Weiss managed to induce a ground out to second to get out of the inning.
In the third inning, both starters got into a bit of trouble. Christian Zazzali (Scotch Plains, N.J.) beat out a double play ball with Tommy O'Hara (Glenview, Ill.) notching a single to put runners at the corners with two outs. A fly out to right helped end the Jumbo threat. In the next half-inning, Bosco hit a two-out double to right with Nowak reaching on an error. Neither would score as Weiss got a ground out to third to end the frame.
In the fourth, Nick Falkson (Dedham, Mass.) led off the inning by giving Tufts the lead. He stepped up and sent a shot over the left field fence to put the Jumbos up 1-0.
Tufts added to the lead in the fifth inning. Eric Schnepf (Bridgewater, N.J.) began with a lead-off single and made it to second on a ground out. After reaching third on a failed pickoff attempt, Zazzali brought him home with a sac fly to right field, giving Tufts a 2-0 lead.
Roger Williams finally managed to break through in the seventh inning. Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) opened the inning with a double, followed by a Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) walk. Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) stepped up next and sent a home run to deep left center, putting RWU on top 3-2.
In the top of the ninth, Tufts was able to put the go-ahead run in scoring position, with runners at second and third with only one out. Ty Sarra (South Windsor, Conn.) was able to work his way out of the jam, getting a strikeout and a ground out to short to earn the save and clinch the Hawk win.
Ethan Klein (Hyde Park, N.Y.) earned the win (1.0 IP, 1 K) in relief of Farrell, who went six innings and allowing two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts. Jenkins and Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn.) both were 2-for-4 in the game.
Weiss allowed three runs in 7.0 innings in the loss. O'Hara and Malcolm Nachmanoff (Boston, Mass.) each had two hits for the Jumbos.
Roger Williams (10-11) continues its three-game homestand Wednesday against Framingham State University. Tufts (10-9) heads to Bowdoin on Friday.
