Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University could not sweep the season series against #8 University of Massachusetts-Boston, as the Beacons defeated RWU 9-2 Wednesday afternoon.
The Beacons managed to score in their first at bat. Ryan McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.) hit a one-out single to reach base. After moving into scoring position on a walk, Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) brought him home on an RBI single.
In the following inning, Anthony Cecere (Wakefield, Mass.) and Wanderson Pinales (Bani, D.R.) began the Beacon at-bat with back-to-back doubles to add another run on the board.
The third saw the Beacons tack on another run on the board. Similar to the previous inning, Dave Murphy (Hudson, N.H.) led off the frame with a double. Herzog would later step up with another RBI single, putting UMass-Boston up 3-0.
Roger Williams was able to score in the bottom of the inning to cut into UMass-Boston's lead. Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) drew a walk to open the third. After stealing second and moving to third, Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) grounded out to second base, bringing home Gulino.
UMB got the run back in the fourth. Finales reached on a third strike that got away to the backstop. Murphy later scored him with a two-out single. The Beacons added another run with McCormick coming in from second on a single by Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.).
In the sixth, Cecere maneuvered his way to a steal of home on a double steal. He avoided getting tagged out on a rundown and crossed home with two outs to give the Beacons a 6-1 lead.
The Beacons extended their lead to eight with three more runs in the ninth, as Kyle Boudrias (Peabody, Mass.) and Pinales each logged run-scoring hits in the frame. The Hawks were able to add one run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) but the seven-run deficit was too much to overcome.
Josh Gerson (Melville, N.Y.) earned the win, going 5.0 innings and allowing one run. McCormick and Murphy both finished with two hits and two runs scored.
Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) gave up five runs (three earned) in 4.0 innings in the loss. Nowak was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
