Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams baseball team fell 10-8 to the Mammoths of Amherst College, in an eight-inning non-conference match up, late Wednesday afternoon.
 
Roger Williams started off slow in the first inning by walking the leadoff batter, Max Steinhorn (Washington, D.C.), who later advanced to second base off of a wild pitch. Steinhorn moved to third when, Joseph Palmo (Austin, Texas), grounded out to the second baseman. Starting pitcher Hayden Parkes (Cranston, R.I.), then threw another wild pitch to walk Ariel Kenny (Chula Vista, Calif.), and bring Steinhorn home. Parks walked two more batters and threw two separate wild pitches, which moved Kenny all the way to third with the bases loaded. The Mammoths weren't able to capitalize once Ethan Klein (Hyde Park, N.Y.) came in to relieve Parkes on the mound.
 
The Hawks responded immediately when Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.), singled up the middle to get on base. Bosco later stole second right before Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) got walked to put runners on first and second. Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) reached first off of a fielder's choice when the Mammoths decided to get the force out at second. Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) RBI singled up the left side to bring Bosco, the tying run, home.
 
After a quick inning and a half, Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) came up to bat, in the bottom of the third, with runners on first and second. Gulino found the gap between third and short to bring in the go-ahead run.
 
The Hawks grew their lead in the fourth inning. Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and later advanced to second, due to throwing error by the pitcher. Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) was able to bring Cedeno home with an RBI double to right.
 
Amherst made the game interesting with an eventful fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Kai Terada-Herzer (Honolulu, Hawaii) cracked one to right field, bringing both runners home to tie up the ball game. Terada-Herzer stole second right before Kevin Schroeder (Ridgewood, N.J.) was able to bring him home by singling up the middle.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Mammoths put in new pitcher, Michael Cortelli (Davie, Fla.), who gave up three runs before being relieved by Stephen Burke (Los Angeles, Calif.). After Cortelli walked George Somers (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) and advanced him to second off a wild pitch, Bosco singled to right field, putting runners on first and third. Bosco advanced off of a wild pitch before Cortelli threw yet another wild pitch, bringing in the tying run. Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) was walked and advanced off of a passed ball, moments before Jenkins got the ball to drop in center field for a two RBI single, which gave the Hawks the 6-4 lead.
 
As things started to look bleak for the Mammoths, Harry Roberson (Arlington, Mass.) started off the seventh inning with a double to left field. Terada-Herzer was then walked and runners later advanced a base each from a wild pitch, putting runners in scoring position. Kaylen Xie (Marietta, Ga.) made contact with the ball and reached first base due to a fielding error by the third baseman that put two more runs on the board for Amherst. Steinhorn and Palmo both singled to center field, giving Palmo an RBI when Xie scored. Pitcher Ty Sarra (South Windsor, Conn.), threw two wild pitches, resulting in yet another Amherst run as the runners rounded the bases. With Palmo in scoring position, Nick Nardone (Fairfield, Conn.) brought him home with an RBI single to right center.  
 
The Hawks were able to score another run off of a fielding error. Amherst continued growing their lead as Steinhorn RBI singled to left, right before RWU retired the seventh inning.
 
Jenkins led off the eighth inning by getting the ball to drop right in play of the left field line for a single. Bryan Goodwin (Belmont, Mass.) pinch ran for Jenkins and used his wheels to advance twice off of a wild pitch and a passed ball. Gulino RBI singled up the middle to bring Goodwin home for the final Hawks run of the game. The game was called after the eighth inning due to darkness.
 
Burke got the win, pitching the final 2.1 innings. Steinhorn was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Terada-Herzer went 1-for-2 with three runs and two RBI.
 
Chris Crawford (Putnam Valley, N.Y.)  took the loss, giving up three unearned runs in 0.1 innings. Bosco was 2-for-5 with three runs and Jenkins finished 3-for-5 with two RBI.
 
Roger Williams (14-14) will be back in action on Saturday, as they host Gordon College. Amherst (14-7) will host Wesleyan on Friday.
