Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Gordon College Saturday by 5-1 and 2-1 (10 inn.) scores.
The double header acknowledged the four senior Hawks Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.), Mike Cardelle (Duxbury, Mass.), Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) and Sam Bennett (Andover, Mass.) before the start of the game.
Derek Hudson (Hudson, N.H.) started the Scots off strong retiring the first five batters. Danny Roth (West Harford, Conn.) was the first Hawk to get on first base on an error from the third baseman.
Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) got the first hit of the game with a single for the Hawks in the third inning. He stole second and was able to get to third on a wild pitch. Dominguez scored on a ground ball to the shortstop by Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) to give the Hawks the first run of the game.
Matt Moffat (Stratford, Conn.) singled to right field to score John Lagerfeldt (Stratford, Conn.) for Gordon in the fourth inning. Erik Gauer (Wayland, N.Y.) was thrown out at home to even the score 1-1.
Chris Crawford (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) gave up one run in five and 2/3 innings pitched for the Hawks. Matt Vernacatola (Berlin, Conn.) came in with runners on first and second and two outs. He hit the first batter he faced to fill the bases, but was able to get out of the inning with a pop up to the shortstop.
Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) singled to left field and advanced to second on an error from the left fielder for RWU to start the sixth inning. Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to third and Stone scored on a throwing error from the third baseman. The Hawks regained the lead at 2-1.
Roth reached second on a fielding error from the first baseman. Jenkins scored from second, putting the Hawks up 3-1 at the bottom of the sixth. Joey Gulino walked to fill the bases and Dominguez singled to right field, scoring Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn.) and Roth. The Hawks finished the inning 5-1.
Ryan Havunen (Lincoln, R.I.) relieved Vernacatola in the seventh inning for RWU. Havunen shut the Scots out in the seven inning, finishing the first game 5-1.
Vernacatola picked up the win for RWU. Dominguez went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while DePreta went 1-3 with one run scored.
Hudson gave up five runs (one earned) in six innings. Daniel Quint (Wells, Maine) went 2-4 and Moffat went 1-2 with an RBI.
The first hit of the second game was a single by Lagerfeldt for the Scots in the second inning. The game got off to a slow start until Roth reached first on a strikeout in the third inning due to wild pitch for the Hawks.
Roth scored from second in the third on a single to center field by Nowak. Nowak advanced to second base on the throw home, putting the Hawks up 1-0.
Quint hit an infield single in the fourth inning for the Scots. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and got to third on a stolen base. With a runner on third and one out, Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.) struck out Travis Benoit (Worcester, Mass.). Dominguez robbed Lagerfeldt on a ground ball up the middle to save the run and keep the Hawks lead.
Benoit hit a double for Gordon to start off the seventh inning. Lagerfeldt reached first on an error by the third baseman to put runners on first and second with no outs. Benoit got picked off second base on a back pick by the catcher for the first out in the inning.
A double by Alec Willey (San Diego, Calif.) in the right-center field gap drove in Lagerfeldt from first base to tie the score at 1-1. Garcia was relieved by Havunen after six and 1/3 innings and gave up one run.
Havunen struck out the following batter and allowed a walk to put runners on first and second. Both advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Havunen struck out the next batter to keep the game tied.
The Hawks were unable to score in the seventh inning to put the game into extra innings. Neither team scored in the eighth and ninth innings.
In the bottom of the tenth, Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) hit a single up the middle and later advanced to second on a passed ball. Roth walked and Nowak got hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
Tim Oh (Columbia, Md.) relieved Jon Sensi (Florence, N.J.) after nine innings with the bases loaded in the 10
th.
Stone got hit by a pitch to score Camner and end the game at 2-1.
Havunen picked up the win for RWU. Camner went 1-4 with a run scored, while Nowak went 1-3 with an RBI.
Sensi gave up one run in the loss. Quint went 2-4, while Lagerfeldt went 1-4 with an RBI.
Roger Williams (16-14, 9-1 CCC) will travel to Curry College for a double header tomorrow at 12 p.m. Gordon College (14-13, 6-5 CCC) will host Eastern Nazarene for a double header tomorrow at 1 p.m.
