SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team utilized a golden goal for their first win of 2018, coming away with a 1-0 overtime win against Eastern Connecticut State University in the Springfield College Invitational.
The Hawks battled the Warriors for 90 scoreless minutes. RWU's defense helped hold Eastern Connecticut State to only two shots in the first half and five in the second. Conversely, RWU put up five shots in the first two halves of play but were unable to log a goal on the board.
It would not be until the overtime period when Roger Williams broke the stalemate. Four minutes into the extra period,
Morgan Snow (Wyckoff, N.J.) converted the game-winning goal off of a pass from
Lexi Larson (Norton, Mass.) to send RWU off the field victorious.
Freshman
Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned her first collegiate win via shutout, making three saves in the game for Roger Williams.
"It is always great to win the first game you play at the start of a new season," said Head Coach
Tim Moody. "We have a lot of new players, we are wearing our new colors and playing a new brand of soccer."
"We started the match very well, controlled the tempo and should have scored a goal or two in the first half. We hit the post and their keeper was kept very busy by our attacking play.
"Eastern CT is a good team which is why they were voted the favorite to the Little East, so in the second half they gave us a few problems to solve.
"We found our feet again 15 minutes into the second half and begin to take control of the game again. We created several good scoring opportunities as the game progressed and looked like the team to win the contest in ninety minutes.
"Unfortunately, we couldn't accomplish it in regulation, so the team talked was to score early in overtime so we wouldn't go to penalty kicks.
"Overall, we were excellent considering it was our season opener against a quality opponent. Key players did their jobs very well for the team and program today!"
RWU (1-0-0) will face Springfield tomorrow at 6:15pm in the championship game.
