Women’s Soccer Taken Down By #23 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team fell behind early and was unable to climb out of the hole as they dropped a 7-0 contest to #23 MIT Tuesday afternoon.

The Engineers were aided by four goals in a span of 8:31 in the first half, including three from Amy Apostol (Los Gatos, Calif.). The four goals came within the first 15 minutes of the game, while Apostol notched the hat trick in only 1:50.

The Hawks were held to only four shots in the contest while MIT put up 25 shots in the game.

Roger Williams goalie Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) fell to 1-3-0 after she made five stops for the Hawks.

The Engineers are now 5-1-2 all-time against Roger Williams in the series which dates back to 2011.

"Over the last six games, we have been able to evaluate the entire squad of players who were available for selection," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "We have challenged them to compete against very good teams, to learn how to play with and without the ball. Like every season, we are still trying to find ourselves, and figure out what are our strengths as well as our areas that need improvement.

"Today's game was no different and we learned more about our qualities and how we need to move forward on this journey together in a manner that will get the best out of the players we have this Fall, to create a competitive team. Players become better by making mistakes, understanding their mistakes and then correcting their mistakes. We talk about what we need to improve and then we work at it not just until we get it right, but until we don't get it wrong again.

"Repetition of skills, the correct technique and creating good habits takes time and it doesn't happen overnight. We are better now than when we arrived less than three weeks ago for preseason. We do not shy away from strong teams within our region, and from the first poll of the season, we have played five schools in the top 10 and have a win against a top-10 team. So to put things in perspective, we are doing what needs to be done.

"We have a young team and are showing growing pains at the moment, which is normal. We expect to be ready for conference play in the near future. This has worked for us in the past and there is no reason it won't happen again for us this fall. We can only control what we do and how we do it. The upperclassmen will make sure we stay focused and disciplined.

"Our freshmen players are playing and showing they can contribute to the success of this program today and will have a big say in how the season plays out. We are a different team than last year that were conference champions but we still have the same desire to be in the playoffs, reach the final and win new silverware."

Roger Williams (1-5-0) will head to Nichols on Saturday for their Commonwealth Coast Conference opener.
