BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team fell to Endicott College 6-0 Saturday afternoon in the team's first Commonwealth Coast Conference game of the 2018 season.
Endicott maintain possession in their offensive half for most of the early part of the opening half. Their push would result in their first goal coming in the fourth minute. Maggie O'Reilly (Cheshire, Conn.) crossed a pass to the right side of the arc to Lauren Whitney (Poway, Calif.). Whitney would fire a shot through the Hawk defense and into the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 Gull lead.
Endicott added another goal in the ninth minute, when Samantha Brown fed a pass to Julie Champigny (Acton, Mass.) on the right side. She slipped her shot through for her seventh goal of the season.
The Gulls added another goal a minute later for a 3-0 advantage. Blake Braman (Clinton, Conn.) took advantage of a loose ball in front of the goal. She got possession and was able to knock in a score to extend Endicott's lead.
Kristen McCarthy (Danvers, Mass.) connected with Jaylin Grabau (Lynnfield, Mass.) for the final goal of the half for Endicott, as the Gulls went into the break with a 4-0 lead.
The Hawk defense came out fresh in the beginning of the second half, withstanding another Gull offensive push. RWU withstood eight penalty corners and nine shots in the first 13 minutes of the half to keep Endicott off the board.
However, the Gulls would come away with another goal in the 49
th minute, when Sydney Poulin (Watertown, Mass.) scored off of a Whitney penalty corner. Two minutes later, McCarthy added the final goal off of a pass from Grabau.
Taylor Farrin (Danvers, Mass.) needed only one save to record the shutout.
Callie Flanagan (Wenham, Mass.) stayed busy in net, making a career-high 14 saves.
Roger Williams (3-3, 0-1 CCC) will host the University of New England on Tuesday afternoon, while Endicott (5-1, 2-0 CCC) will travel to the Western New England next, also on Tuesday.
