BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team lost in a tight game to the University of New England 4-3 Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams remained scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game until Kendra Macdonald (Lebanon, N.H.) scored unassisted for the Nor'easters. The Hawks then pushed back and tied the game 1-1 with a goal by
Sydney McCarthy (Little Falls, N.Y.) from
Anna Vasaturo (Pittsford, N.Y.) a minute later.
Only two minutes later, Brooke Lemerise (Bartlett, N.H.) connected with Kersey Boulay (Liberty, Maine.) and scored UNE's second goal to put the score at 2-1 with 22 minutes left in the first half.
Five minutes later, the Hawks tied up the game for the second time with a goal by
Brooklyn Cenatiempo (Trumbull, Conn.). She picked up a pass from
Lea Peterson to tie the game up.
Later with 3:15 left in the first half, RWU's
Callie Flanagan (Wenham, Mass.) helped keep the game tied with a key save off of a shot from Reanna Boulay (Liberty, Maine). However, UNE was determined to get the lead. The Nor'easters scored an unassisted goal by Jillian Lachapelle (Gilford, N.H.) less than a minute later. The second half ended with a score of 3-2 and UNE in the lead.
With clean fieldwork, the Nor'easters took their biggest lead of the game with a goal by Kersey Boulay, assisted by Marge Gardiner (East Northport, N.Y.). That would put UNE up 4-2 less than ten minutes into the second half.
The ball remained on the Hawks' side of the field for the majority of the second half with blocked shots from MacDonald and Gardiner for the Nor'easters with 16 minutes left in the game.
Taking a shot from
Hannah Gaffney (Bolton, Mass.) for the Hawks, Liz Sargent (South Burlington, Vt.) made a strong save to keep UNE's lead with less than five minutes left. Not even a minute later, Vasaturo made her first goal of the game for the Hawks taking an assist from Stevens to cut the deficit to one with four minutes remaining.
Yet for the Hawks, both teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the game with the Nor'easters taking the win of 4-3.
Flanagan had six saves for RWU, while Sargent had two saves for UNE.
