Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Plymouth State Edges Women’s Soccer

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team could not end its skid as the Hawks fell 0-1 to Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon.

In the first five minutes of the game, the Hawks had a couple of failed clears out of the back end that Plymouth State almost took advantage of. In the second minute, Taylor Siewierski (Colebrook, N.H.) put up a long shot that bounced off of the cross bar, then followed that up with a shot three minutes later that just sailed over the goal.

Jordan Meier (Holderness, N.H.) stepped up a couple minutes later with two point-blank attempts to put the Panthers on the board, but timely saves by Brooke Hathaway (Riverton, Utah) kept the game scoreless.

The 21st minute saw RWU just miss a good chance to score. Raleigh LeMiere Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) sent a good pass towards Kylie Casey (E. Longmeadow, Mass.), but Amy Luther (Westerly, R.I.) was able to outrun her and clear the ball just before Casey could get there.

The Panthers would break through shortly into the second half. Mallory Lloyd (Hartland, Vt.) took the ball from the right side in the 55th minute and made her way through the Hawk defense towards the right side of the box. She would kick a shot just into the left corner to give Plymouth State a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Kelly Yadoff (Wyckoff, N.J.) almost notched the equalizer for the Hawks. She spilt the defense off of a pass up the middle and got a clean shot off. However Cat Robbins (Franklin, Mass.) made a key diving stop to preserve the lead.

Plymouth State came close to adding another tally on the scoreboard in the 65th minute. Lloyd kicked a loose ball into the box towards Meier, who was able to bury one in the middle of the net. However, the shot would be waived off as she was ruled offsides.

The Hawk offense was unable to produce a goal in the final 25 minutes of play. RWU's last chance came in the final minute of the game, when Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) knocked a shot directly at Robbins for the stop and the Panther win.

Hathaway had four saves in the game for RWU, while Robbins finished with eight saves in the win.

"We are very disappointed with the way we played today as well as the result which doesn't happen very often here at Roger Williams," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "We started very slow and caused ourselves problems by not doing what we practice and encourage from our players to do from day one.

"Now and again this happens, so hopefully that is going to be the only game of the season we play poorly with no desire or fight. You saw in the last 10 minutes that it is what we could do when pressed to find the equalizer but it was too little and too late.

"It looked like we were going to pick it up about 20 minutes into the game when we started to put a few passes together and move the ball quickly, but our movement didn't match the urgency that was required. It was if we were waiting for a spark to ignite the situation, to get us into the game but we were really off the pace today and we lacked the commitment needed to win soccer matches.

"We need to brave in our approach to the game, we need to better at making decisions so that we are effective, efficient and productive in all aspects of the game when we are attacking as well as defending.  If we accepted the challenge and collectively focus on what we need to do at practice and take that into our next game we shall see the results sooner or later.

"What we do and how we do it is a lifestyle and it isn't for everyone. You must love the game and the people who are on the team with you. We have an awesome history and our past is full of tremendous achievements, but we must look forward, not backwards."

Roger Williams (1-3-0) will be in action tomorrow against Middlebury College. Plymouth State (3-0-0) heads to Southern Vermont on Tuesday.
