Women's Basketball Takes Loss to WNE

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball Team was defeated against Western New England University on their Senior Day this Saturday, 58-46.
 
Margarita Delaporta (Canton, Mass.) is the only senior graduating for the Hawks this May and was recognized before the start of the game.
 
Courtney Carlson (Woodbury, Conn.) put the Golden Bears on the board first with a layup after taking an assist from Meghan Gilhool (Montrose, Pa.). Three minutes later Delaporta made a layup to give RWU their first points, 2-5.
 
Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) took the ball down the court to make a layup for the Hawks, 6-12. RWU trailed behind UNE for the remainder of the quarter with the score at 6-14.
 
The second quarter started with layups from Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) and Emily Yonych (Cheshire, Conn.) to cut the Golden Bears lead to four. With just under seven minutes left in the quarter, the game tied with a layup from Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) taking an assist from Mancinelli at 16-16.
 
Thirty seconds later, the Hawks took the lead for the first time with a layup from Yonych at 20-18. With less than two minutes left in the half, the game tied again at 22-22 with a jumper from Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) for WNE. The first half ended in the tie, 22-22.
 
Gilhool scored a three pointer to start off the second half for the Golden Bears. The Hawks took the lead a minute later with an and-one from Jerahian to put the score at 27-25. The score tied two times before WNE took the lead with a layup from Emily Scurka (Billerica, Mass.).
 
With the Golden Bears up 36-29, Karli Opalka (Southbury, Conn.) took an assist from Jerahian for RWU to put the score at 31-36. The third quarter ended with WNE in the lead, 45-36.
 
In the final quarter, the Golden Bears took their biggest lead of the game so far at 47-36 with a layup from Carlson. UNE took control of the final quarter with an 8-0 run and the score at 53-36 with less than four minutes left.
 
Lindsay Towle (Dover, N.H.) scored a three pointer to cut the Golden Bears deficit followed by a layup from Delaporta to put the score at 41-53. Towle tied the game up thirty seconds later with a jumper taking an assist from Dealporta, 43-53.
 
The game ended with a layup from Sydney Fisher (Strafford, N.H.) to put the final score at 58-46.
 
Leone led RWU with 10 points and five rebounds. Jerahian contributed with 10 points and three rebounds. Opalka then had six points and nine rebounds.
 
Farrell led WNE with 16 points and three rebounds. Carlson contributed with 12 points and five rebounds. Gilhool then had 11 points and seven rebounds.
 
Roger Williams (13-12) heads to the CCC Quarterfinals next week. Western New England (17-8) also heads to the CCC Quarterfinals next week.
