BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team suffered a 2-11 setback to Babson College Wednesday afternoon in the first game of the season for both teams.
Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) kicked off the game with a goal less than two minutes into the contest for a 1-0 Babson lead. He would add another tally at 9:36 to put the Beavers up 2-0. Ethan Carpenter (Orlando, Fla.) added another goal for Babson 16 seconds after the ensuing faceoff, giving the Beavers a 3-0 lead and forcing a Hawk timeout.
Brendan Duffy (Duxbury, Mass.) scored a minute later for a 4-0 lead. The Hawks were able to get four shots on goal in the period but could not net a score as the period ended in Babson's favor.
The Beavers added three more in the first five minutes of the second via scores by Mishkind, Duffy, and Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.). The Hawks were finally able to break through with 4:06 left in the quarter as
Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) scored off a pass from
Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.) for put RWU on the board. They would be the last score of the half as Babson went into the break up 7-1.
Babson scored first in the third period before RWU's
Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) notched his first goal of the season off of a Navarro past at the 3:39 mark. That would be the only scoring of the third period, with Babson taking an 8-2 lead into the fourth. In the final period, Carpenter scored twice as part of Babson's three goals in the fourth, as they came away with the win.
Carpenter and Mishkind each scored three goals in the game, while Duffy added two. Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made 10 saves for Babson in the win.
Bova and Mullane had the lone goals for the Hawks.
Brian Brockwell (Duxbury, Mass.) notched three caused turnovers while
Scott Trudel (Manchester, Vt.) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) had 15 saves in the loss.
Roger Williams will host UMass-Boston on Saturday while Babson faces Skidmore, also on Saturday.
