BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball Team defeated Endicott College in a close game this Saturday, 86-82.
Taking an assist from Matt McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine), Joe Shehadi (Dorset, Vt.) scored a three-pointer to put the Gulls on the board first. After two free throws from McDevitt,
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) made a layup less than a minute later to put the score at 2-5.
Endicott increased their lead to 12-6 with a jumper from McDevitt. The Gulls then went on a 9-4 run with the help of a three-pointer and layup from Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) to put the score at 19-10.
With less than ten minutes left, Brown made a three for Endicott, followed by a jumper from
Doug Hostetler (Somers, Conn.) for RWU to put the score at 24-16. Taking assists from Hostetler,
Eli Harris (Falmouth, Mass.) made two three-pointers in a row to cut the Gulls lead to four (22-26).
Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.) then scored a three for RWU to put the score at 25-28. The Hawks took the lead for the first time at 4:30 with another three from Heaton off an assist from
Rich Pugliese (Middlebury, Conn.).
The first half remained close as the score was tied at 31 with just over four minutes left off of two free throws from Coene. With two more free throws and a layup from Coene, RWU took back the lead at 35-31.
The Gulls came back with a layup and free throw from Jordan Pettway (Bridgeport, Conn.) to put them in the lead once again at 37-35. The game was tied at 37-37 with just over a minute left with a layup from Heaton. The second half ended at 41-37 with the Hawks trailing behind the Gulls.
A minute into the second half, Heaton made an and-one to put the score at 40-41 in Endicott's favor. The teams exchanged baskets as the Hawks gained back their lead at 47-43 with a layup from Coene taking an assist from Hart.
With less than 13 minutes left, the Hawks gain a lead of 10 points at 58-48. Two minutes later, the Gulls cut RWU's lead to four with a layup from Pettway to put the score at 56-60. With another and-one from Heaton, the Hawks took back their 10-point lead at 72-62 with six minutes left.
With less than a minute left, Brown scored a three-pointer, cutting the Hawks lead to three. McDevitt later completed an and-one for the Gulls with 10.7 seconds remaining in the game put the score at 83-82. After
Bryan Donovan (Gainesville, Fla.) hit one of two free throws, Coene got a key block on the next Gull possession to keep the lead. The game finished with Heaton scoring two free throws to win the game for the Hawks 86-82.
Coene led RWU with a double-double with 29 points and 16 rebounds. Heaton contributed with 20 points and three rebounds.
Brown led Endicott with 30 points and six assists. McDevitt added with 27 points and five rebounds.
Roger Williams (12-11, 9-5 CCC) will travel to Curry College this Wednesday. Endicott College (16-7, 9-5 CCC) will head to Western New England University, also on Wednesday.
