Softball Takes One In DH Against Coast Guard

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Softball team took one to the United States Coast Guard Academy this Tuesday afternoon, down 16-5 in the first game and winning 9-11 in the second game.
 
During the first game, the Hawks came out strong starting with Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) who led off with a single to right field. Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) was due up next and singled to the short shop beating the throw. A pass ball from Bear's pitcher Julia Ferris (Falls Chruch, Va.) advanced the runners. Next up was Tara Chatowsky (North Kingston, R.I.) who then drove the ball up the middle for a 2 RBI single plating Provencal and E. Lombardo for the first two runs of the game.
 
The Bears earned a total of seven runs from the second to the fourth inning taking the lead 7-2. It was in the top of the fifth, that they scored nine runs on           Hailey Prechtel (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.).
 
The Hawks tried to come back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs from E. Lombardo and Taylor Bigliani's (Saint James, N.Y.) RBI singles and Tr Chatowsky's sacrifice line out to center field. However, they could not catch up in time ending the game at 16-5.
 
In the second game, the Bears scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning. After a double to left field from E. Lombardo, Ellie Fleming (Marshfield, Mass.) took her home with a single to second base to put the Hawks on the board. Fleming was then brought home after an RBI from Tr Chatowsky to put the score at 3-2. To put the Hawks in the lead, Coast Guard's center field made an error to bring both Lombardo and Chatowsky home by the end of the first inning to put the Hawks up one 4-3. 
 
The second inning started with an RBI from Carly Hattman (Egg Harbor, N.J.) for the Bears to advance Kayla Sowers (Rocklin, Calif.) and Kelli Franza (Roseto, Pa.) home. Coast Guard increased their lead with an unearned run from Hattman to put the score at 7-4. The Hawks trailed behind by three the rest of the inning.
 
RWU froze Coast Guard in the third inning with Lia Nocella (Tynsboro, Mass.) striking out the first batter. Alexandra Lombardo earned the next run for the Hawks after an RBI from Madi Francis (Coventry, Conn.) to put the score at 7-5..
 
An RBI from Courtney McKenna (Sparta, N.J.) took Hattman home to bring the Bears lead back to two in the top of the fourth inning. Maggie Perez (Granada Hills, Calif) then posted a two-RBI base hit to center field to bring both McKenna and Hurley home and bring the score to 10-5. With Sydney Arendt (Manistee, Mich.) on the mound, the Hawks did not score a single run in the fourth inning.
 
In the fifth inning, both teams showed overall infielder effort and neither scored any runs to keep the score at 10-5.
 
The sixth inning started with two fly outs and one ground out from the Bears. Fleming earned the next run for the Hawks after an RBI from Lombardo to bring the score to 10-6.
 
In the final inning, the Bears remained frozen and did not score any runs since the fourth inning. The Hawks tied up the game at 10-10 after an RBI from Lombardo to bring Francis home and a double RBI from Provencal to bring Audrey Gavin (Old Lyme, Conn.) home. With a double to center field from Fleming, Provencal reached home to secure the win for the Hawks. Fleming was the last to score a run after a single to center field from Lombardo and the final score of 11-10.
 
Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) struck out four and allowed nine runs in the win. Fleming finished with three runs and two RBIs.  
 
Sydney Arendt  (Manistee, Mich.) allowed eight runs in six innings of the loss. Julia Ferris (Falls Church, Va.) allowed three runs in .2 innings. Hattman finished with three runs and one RBI.
 
Roger Williams (5-6) will host Eastern Nazarene College in a double header this Friday. Coast Guard (6-5) will travel to Smith College in a double header this Saturday.
