Baseball Takes Victory Over UMass Dartmouth

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Baseball Team took victory over UMass Dartmouth this Wednesday, 12-6.
 
In the first inning, an RBI from Jack Harrington (Barnstable, Mass.) took Nick Andrews (Raynham, Mass.) home to give the Corsairs their first run. The Hawks remained scoreless in the bottom of the first.
 
Kyle Schaefer (Madison, Conn.) struck out two batters in the second inning to lead the Hawks into the bottom of the inning with a home run from Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.). The score was tied going into the third.
 
With his second RBI in the game, Harrington advanced Andrews to home in the top of the inning for UMD. Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) then went up to bat for the Hawks and scored a home run to bring both him and Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) home to put them in the lead.
 
The Hawks froze the Corsairs in the bottom of the fourth inning. A double RBI from Gulino took both Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) and Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) home, unearned, to increase RWU's lead to three at a score of 5-2.
 
In the fifth inning, Mitch Baker (Braintree, Mass.) doubled to left field in a double RBI to take Harrington and Mike Knell (Dennis, Mass.) home to tighten the score at 4-5. In the bottom of the inning, RWU gained an incredible lead starting with an RBI from Gulino to bring Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) home. With the bases loaded, Bonavita scored his second home run of the game to bring Gulino, Dominguez and Cedeno home and the score at 10-4. The next two runs for the Hawks came from wild pitches to bring the score to 12-4.
 
Chris Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) went in for the Hawks as the pitcher and struck out two batters to lead the Hawks into the bottom of the sixth inning. Neither teams reached home in the inning.
 
With the bases full in the top of the sixth, Tucker Hetherman (Webster, Mass.) had an RBI to advance Mike Knell (Dennis, Mass.) home for the Corsairs. This was followed by an unearned run from Harrington to put the score at 6-12. RWU could not find home the rest of the inning.
 
The game slowed down when neither team could make any runs the rest of the game. The Hawks took the win with a significant lead of 12-6.
 
Schaefer struck out five and allowed four runs in five innings. Bonavita finished two runs with six RBIs.
 
Berdecia allowed five runs in four innings of the loss. Harrington finished with two runs and two RBIs.
 
Roger Williams (4-7) will host Curry College in a doubleheader on Saturday. UMass Dartmouth (5-6) will host Wheaton College tomorrow.
