Baseball Downed In High-Scoring Affair

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. — The Roger Williams Baseball team fell 11-18 to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Thursday afternoon in a non-conference contest.

In the top of the first, Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) singled through the right side advancing to second on the throw that got Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) out at third base. After a walk from Corsair pitcher Ryan Britton, Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) stepped up to the plate and ripped a single through the left side to plate Bosco for the first run of the game. After another walk loaded the bases, Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to bring in the second run 2-0.

The Corsairs tied the game in the bottom of the first from a 2-RBI single from Jack Harrington to put the score at 2-2. Mike Knell later scored on a failed double steal, as Harrington was thrown out at second.

In the second, the Corsairs took a commanding 10-2 lead after posting seven runs in the inning. Nate Tellier and Pat Vartanian both posted 2-RBI hits in the frame to help UMass-Dartmouth take the lead. An inning later, Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) cut into the deficit for RWU with a 2-RBI double to bring home Cedeno and Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.).

UMass-Dartmouth got three of those runs back in the bottom of the third before Roger Williams made it a 6-13 game with RBI singles from Bonavita and Joey Gulino (Meridien, Conn.). However, the Corsairs tacked on five more runs between the fifth and sixth runs to go up 18-6.

The Hawks mounted a comeback in the final two innings of the game. Bases-loaded walks by James Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) and Ricky Miller (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) helped cut into the gap. In the top of the ninth, RWU added three more runs and managed to get the bases loaded with two outs to continue the comeback. However, a groundout to second ended the game in UMD's favor.

Anthony Sapienza (North Dartmouth, Mass.) took the loss, allowing 10 runs in 1.2 innings of work. Stone finished 2-for-3 with a runs scored and a pair of walks. Jenkins was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bosco went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Roger Williams (5-8-1) will head to Nichols on Saturday for a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader.
