Men’s Lacrosse Logs Win Over Curry

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team survived a late push by Curry College Saturday afternoon, as the Hawks notched a 10-8 win over the Colonels in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

Goals were hard to come by early on for both teams. Brenden Whitten (Kennebunk, Maine) scored for RWU on the opening possession, followed by Cameron Nigro (putting in a goal at the 9:04 mark. Those would be the only goals for either team for most of the first quarter until Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) scored with 2:08 left in the period. Jared Grier (Duxbury, Mass.) added another score with 1:37 left to put RWU up 3-1 going into the second.

Roger Williams would hold Curry scoreless for most of the second quarter, while Grier, Mullane, and Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) all scored to help push RWU to a 6-1 advantage. Nigro scored with just under two minutes left to send the Colonels into halftime with a four-goal deficit.

In the third, Curry put up three goals to RWU's one in the period, including two in the final two minutes of play to pull the game within two. Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.) helped give RWU a little breathing room with a goal with 16 seconds left to put RWU up by three heading into the fourth.

Mullane scored twice in the first two minutes of the fourth to extend RWU's lead to five. However, Curry made a late run beginning with a goal by MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.) with 7:37 left. He would later score a man-up goal with 2:20 to make it a two-goal game. However, key caused turnovers by Brian Brockwell (Duxbury, Mass.), Sebastian Suarez (West Hartford, Conn.), and Shawn Errasti (Duxbury, Mass.) helped RWU run out the clock, as Curry was unable to complete the comeback.

Mullane finished with seven points (5 G, 2 A), while Marzec added three points (1 G, 2 A). Brockwell added six ground balls and three caused turnovers while Joseph Elia (Wantagh, N.Y.) had five ground balls and one caused turnover. Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) made 14 saves in the win for RWU.

Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) led Curry with three points (1 G, 2 A) while Nigro and Urbano both scored twice. Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.) had six ground balls while Cam Gainey (Truro, Mass.) had a pair of ground balls and caused turnovers. Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) had four saves in the loss.
