BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team defeated Johnson & Wales University this Saturday, 13-8.
The Wildcats were first on the board with an unassisted goal by Thomas Lyons (Burlington, Mass.). Less than a minute later,
Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass) took an assist from
Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) to tie the game, 1-1.
Despite four shots from each team, neither could find the back of the net until the final minute in the first period. Ben Farrell (Baltimore, Md.) logged an unassisted goal to put JWU in the lead, 2-1.
The teams went back and forth in the second period with a goal from
Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) after taking a pass from
Gabe Reale (Fairfield, Conn) for the Hawks. About a minute later, Lyons scored his second goal of the game with an assist from Farrell to put the score at 3-2.
The Hawks came back with a goal from Daniel Civello (Killingworth, Conn) taking an assist from
Ryan Phillips (Hanover, Mass.) The Wildcats persevered and took a lead of three with goals from Carter Young, Matt Gelb (Huntington, N.Y.), and Farrell. JWU was up 6-3 going into the second half.
The Hawks could not find the back of the net until seven minutes into the second half with a goal from Grier and an assist from
Brian Brockwell (Duxbury, Mass.). A minute later, Erik Lindaas (Milford, Pa.) gave the Wildcats another goal to put the score at 7-4.
With a little over three minutes left in the third period, Grier logged two goals to cut the deficit, taking assists from both
Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) and
Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.). The Hawks were only down by one going into the final period.
Fabel and Grier scored a goal each within the first four minutes of the fourth period to put the Hawks in the lead for the first time in the game at 8-7. Bova scored an unassisted goal to increase their lead followed with a goal from Lindaas for the Wildcats.
The Hawks dominated the rest of the game starting with a goal from Grier after taking an assist from Mullane. Within the last three minutes, Marzec,
Brenden Whitten (Kennebunk, Maine), and
Scott Trudel (Manchester, Vt.) scored to secure the Hawks' win at 13-8.
Grier led RWU with six goals, one assist and one turnover. Bova contributed with two goals.
Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) had 14 saves in goal for RWU.
Farrell led JWU with two goals, one assist and one turnover. Lyons and Lindaas each had two goals.
Bradley Morris (Bayport, N.Y.) had 20 saves in the loss for JWU.
Roger Williams (4-1) will be heading to Widener University next Saturday. Johnson and Wales (0-4) will be heading to Emerson College this Thursday.
